Kamo, Michiko “Mickie” (née Takeda)
Passed away peacefully at home in Elmira, with family at her side, on Thursday, September 29, 2022, at the age of 92. Cherished mother of Noriko (Peter), Denise (Brian), and Sharon (Bill). Adored grandmother of Kate (Colin), Sean (Dorothy), Kelly (Kiyo), Andrew James “AJ”, Adele, and Celeste, and great-grandmother of Isabel. Dear sister of Tobie Sakamoto (George S.), and sisters-in-law Fudge (Kinji) and Aiko (George). Will be missed by many nieces, nephews, in-laws and their families. Predeceased by parents Fusajiro and Yoshi Takeda (née Hatanaka), her beloved husband of 55 years, Ralph Ritsu Kamo, and siblings Mun (Tosh), George, Ege (Nancy), Kinji, and Novey (Min). Born and raised in Coghlan, BC on November 4, 1929, Mickie, along with her family, was forced to leave the family’s two strawberry farms during WWII and relocate to Shaughnessy, AB to work on a sugar beet farm. Soon after the war, her family purchased farmland and settled near Coaldale, AB. After Mickie finished her schooling at secretarial college in Calgary, her parents sent her to Toronto to look after her brother George, who had finally been granted permission by the federal government to leave Alberta and was studying engineering at the University of Toronto. While in Toronto, Mickie also worked for an insurance company downtown. It was in Toronto that she met her future husband and, after marrying Ralph, became a full-time homemaker, raising 3 daughters and, later, a Yorkshire terrier named Pippin. Mickie was both practical and frugal – Takeda family traits – and repaired, reused, and recycled before it became the trend. For her growing family (and herself), she sewed and knitted clothing. She loved gardens, and had a prolific green thumb, growing both flowers and vegetables. Social outings with Ralph and their Nisei friends – golfing, bowling, ballroom dancing, dining out – she greatly enjoyed, and highlights of the summer were the Japanese Canadian Cultural Association annual picnic with Ralph’s family and later, yearly family outings to the Stratford Festival. Travelling, which she loved, included trips to visit family in Alberta, wintering in Myrtle Beach for golf, sightseeing in Europe, and Disney cruises when her granddaughter Katie, was performing for the cruise line as a dancer. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 12, 2022 at 2 p.m. The service will also be livestreamed and can be accessed on Mickie’s tribute page of the funeral home website. In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations to the Japanese-Canadian Cultural Centre, Elmira District Community Living or St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation may be made through the funeral home.
