It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Michele Marsilio on Sunday, October 30, 2022 at the age of 85. Beloved husband of 63 years to Maria, loving father to Teresa and Francesco and Mirella and Paolo, and treasured “Nonno Mike” to Sienna, Olivia, Giulia, Chiara, Luca, Adamo, and Adriano.
Predeceased by parents Nicola and Teresa Marsilio, Michele will be remembered by brothers Giuseppe and Vincenzo in Italy. Michele will also be remembered by his brother-in-law Adolfo Acierno along with his brother and sister-in-laws in Italy and numerous nieces, nephews, compari, friends, and “paesans” in Hamilton, Windsor, Montreal, and back home in Italy.
Born in Guardialfiera, September 15, 1937, Michele first came to Canada in 1953. In 1959, he returned to Italy to marry his one true love, Maria, and shortly afterwards they sailed, along with their hopes and dreams, to build a good life together in Canada. Settling in Hamilton, he and Maria raised their two daughters while running two successful businesses on Barton Street. As a proud Hamiltonian, Mike worked side by side with Maria, opening Marsilio’s Supermarket in 1962 and serving many, many clients in the community over the years with warmth and attention. In the early 80s, Mike and Maria shifted their business to importing and installing ceramic tiles from Italy.
Always a hard worker, Michele finally retired in 2000, but he didn’t slow down. He could often be found tending to his garden, playing cards at the Italian club, or playing bocce with Maria and their friends at the Rosedale Bocce Club. But Michele’s greatest joy were his grandchildren and the Saturday night dinners with his family around a long table, which involved too much food, too much noise, and so much love.
Michele could always be counted on for his generosity and a visitor to his home would often find themselves leaving with a homemade lonza or some fruits or vegetables from his garden on Highway 8. He valued honesty and fairness and showed kindness to everyone. He taught these things to his family, and the lessons passed on, the memories created, and the love that he shared will forever be in our hearts. Your hopes and dreams came true, Dad. We love you very much.
