Obituary
Michael William Howe passed away peacefully at Muskoka Shores in Gravenhurst on April 18, 2022, in his 80th year. He was predeceased by his parents John and Eva Howe, as well as his siblings John Howe and Joan Thompson. Survived by his brother-in-law Bill Thompson. He was the dear uncle to many nieces and nephews: Chris (Stacey), Brock, Kathy (Andy), Bob (Kerri), Louise (Dana), and Carol. He will be greatly missed by his Island Park cousins: the Balls, the Pattersons, and the Sebbens. He will be especially missed by his best friend Victor, and his golfing buddy Bob.
Mike was born on October 23, 1942, in Stratford, Ontario. His family lived in Kapuskasing, Ontario, where he spent his younger years. Mike attended St. Michael’s College in Toronto. He obtained his BA at the University of Waterloo, where he then worked in the insurance industry and started his own successful insurance brokerage while living in Toronto. He then acquired an MBA at the University of Toronto, while still running his insurance business. Mike then earned his Ph.D. in business from the University of Toronto, which was a very proud moment. After that, he sold his insurance business and entered academia, which became his passion. He began teaching at Brock University, University of Guelph, Laurentian University in Sudbury, and finally, Laurentian Campus in Barrie.
Mike loved Muskoka. It’s where he grew up and where he spent every summer at his family cottage. That’s why when he was teaching in Sudbury and Barrie, he winterized the cottage in Port Carling so he could live there full-time and then into his retirement.
He was a great sports enthusiast. He loved all sports, especially football and hockey, whether playing or watching them. He continued jogging and playing golf into his later years. His favourite sports to cheer on were college football (Notre Dame) and junior hockey (Barrie Colts).
Mike was a true gentleman with such a good heart. He had such a brilliant mind; he always had a book in hand. He loved Weber’s burgers and Oliver’s coffee. Mike loved his dogs. They were his world, especially Charley and Sarah, who loved him right back. His hardy laugh, his big smile, and his storytelling will be fondly remembered by all.
Thank you to all the staff at Muskoka Shores for taking such great care of Mike over these past few years. A special thank-you to Kim for her kindness and support.
Cremation has taken place. A private graveside service will occur at a later date.
If desired, donations made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Muskoka or OSPCA – Muskoka Animal Centre would be greatly appreciated and can be arranged through Reynolds Funeral Home. Messages of condolence and memories can be shared at www.reynoldsfuneral.com.
