Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family announce the peaceful passing of Michael Joseph O’Reilly Hackett at Western Long Term Care Center palliative care unit, Corner Brook at the age of 80 years.
Michael was born in Innis Mara in the Bay of Islands on November 29, 1941 to Madge (nee Hynes) and Ignatius Hackett.
He was predeceased by: his wife Margaret (nee Gillis); his parents Madge and Ignatius Hackett; brothers: Howard and David; and granddaughter Meghan.
He is lovingly remembered by: his two sisters Joyce (Bruce) and Judy (Brit); eight children: Sandy (Jaci), Peter (Charmaine), Barb (Joe), Mary (Jim), Howard (Wanda), Lisa (Clifford), Tracy (Kevin), and Michael Jr. (Amanda); eleven grandchildren; and six great grandchildren; as well as a large circle of extended family and friends.
Michael was a fireman at the Stephenville Airport, Torbay Airport and actively involved in the volunteer fire department in Port-au-Port. He was active in the church and numerous community committees. He wrote a book about his early childhood memories of Woods Island. Dad was a Mayor of Port-au-Port, an environmental activist and a talk show contributor. More than anything else he was a family man. He loved his family and was always the first one to help or provide advice. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, farmer and a very good friend. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
A visitation will take place on Thursday, October 6th from 2:00 – 4:00 & 7:00-9:00 PM at Russell’s Funeral Home, Stephenville. The funeral service will be held on Friday, October 7th at 10:00 AM from Maria Regina Parish, Port au Port East. Interment to follow at the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Port au Port East.
