Metro Filewich
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Metro Filewich after a brief illness at Grace Hospital on Saturday April 16, 2022.
Metro was born on November 8, 1933, in the Municipality of Shell River (Roblin, MB) to Dmytro and Sophie Filewich. He was the second youngest of 14 children, 7 boys and 7 girls.
He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years Maria Filewich (2021) his brothers Steve, Harry, Mike, Peter and Paul and his sisters Ann Sadowick, Mary Menzul, Nellie Gerega, Helen Filewich, Catherine Stratychuk and Pauline Urbanski. He will be lovingly remembered by his children Pamela (Ken) Anderson of Red Lake, Ontario and Keon (Arlyn) Filewich of Winnipeg. Grandson Casey Anderson (Gianna), granddaughter Haley Kocis (Garrett) and great grandsons Maverick Kocis and Brooks Anderson all of Red Lake Ontario, granddaughters Keylyn and McKenna and grandson Kyler Filewich of Winnipeg, Manitoba, brother John Filewich of Dryden, Ontario and sister Irene Pronyk of Roblin, Manitoba. He will also be lovingly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews.
Metro was an avid baseball player and in 1955 he was scouted by the Washington Senators (now the Minnesota Twins) and attended their spring training camp in Winter Garden, Florida. Homesickness got the best of Metro and he left Spring Training to return and work on the family farm, until 1960 at which time he married Maria Plaksuik, of Pelly, Sk and moved to Dryden, Ontario. He was employed at the Dryden Paper Mill for 32 years. In Dryden, Maria and Metro raised their two children, Pam and Keon, in a happy home they built, with a beautiful garden and lawn carefully tended to by Metro. Annual trips to Florida and a family trip to Ukraine were highlights of a wonderful family life. After retirement they moved to Winnipeg, and spent winters at their condo in St. Petersburg, Florida, enjoying baseball, playing shuffleboard and Happy Hours with their Florida family.
His love of all sports brought him great joy, especially watching his children and grandchildren participate. He was proud of all of their accomplishments.
This past year, up until his passing, Metro resided at Harmony Court in Winnipeg. Many thanks to the staff there for making his time there so comfortable.
A small family service will be held on Thursday, April 21, 2022, and a Celebration of Life and Interment for Metro and Maria will be held early this summer.
