Meryl Alanna MacKenzie
“Accept no one’s definition of your life, define yourself” and that is exactly how Mom lived her life up until the day she passed; September 1, 2022. It is with great heartache we announce the passing of an extraordinary women, Meryl Alanna MacKenzie. We want to tell one more story about the beautiful life she lived and the impact she made on many.
Meryl is not only survived by but lived life by her husband of 42 years, Hector MacKenzie, her daughters Sarah (Travis), Megan (Adam), Heather (Scott) and sister Lynda Singer. She found her greatest parts of life were spent alongside her grandchildren Taylor, Evann, Ella, Ava, Jackson, Nora and Hudson.
She was predeceased by her parents Ted and Mora Singer as well as her granddaughter Quinn Farrow who we know without a doubt she is holding tight in her arms now.
Meryl was born in Poole, England and was very proud of her British roots. Her path led her into a 5- decade long career in nursing. She worked in Coronary Care for the first 35 years, with the occasional leave of absence to travel the world. Her path then led her to a 15-year placement with N.S.C.C. as a cherished clinical nursing instructor. Meryl saw the importance of passing on her knowledge and ensuring each nurse reached their greatest potential. We know that her strong work ethic will live on through her student’s care. She was most proud of passing her love and dedication of nursing on to her daughter and grandchildren.
She raised 3 strong women who she not only loved but truly enjoyed. She gave everything she had as a mother and then as a Nana. Her greatest role in life was to be Nana. She touched each of their lives in her special way and all are so much better for the love and light she shared.
She touched so many lives in her lifetime and will forever be remembered for her selfless dedication to everyone she met, taught and cared for. There are endless stories filled with laughter and love that we are left to hold in our hearts. Everyone that knew Meryl knew her love of telling stories which taught us to tell the stories that matter, to look back and laugh and love the life we were given. What we would give to hear one more story.
Meryl was never afraid of a challenge and responded in a manner that always seemed effortless. This was especially true in her final battle. We could not be more proud or inspired by the way she chose to spend her last few months with us. We want to thank Dr. John Hawrylak ND for giving her a team when she needed one, Kieran MacKinnon of Feit Physiotherapy for getting her ready for the fight and the VON for the encouragement and support through this journey.
We know when the gates opened you had the biggest welcoming with tea and toast awaiting you. Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Tuesday September 6th between 4-7pm.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday September 7th at 1pm at the Church of Christ the King, 19 Trinity Ave, Sydney, NS.
Celebration of life to following service at 4pm located at 55 McLean St, Sydney.
