Obituary of Melvin George Vardy
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Melvin George Vardy at the age of 92. He passed away peacefully with his loving family at his side on June 23rd, 2022 at the Western Memorial Palliative Care Centre.
Melvin, affectionately known to many as Melv, was born in Howley, NL on October 24th, 1929 to the late George and Lily Vardy. He worked 43 years for the woods department of both Bowater and Kruger. He retired in 1989 enjoying the past 33 years of retirement at his home in Pasadena and his cabin on Howley Road, where he enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and woodworking.
Melv leaves his wife of 59 years, Jackie Vardy; his 3 children, Butch (Bev), Kay (Jacques), and Kimball (Robyn); 6 grandchildren Jay, Meredith (Dave), Brittany (Alex), Joey (Grace), Lucas, and Krystal (Tiger); and 6 great-grandchildren Kolbie, Julia, Carson, Madeline, Laikyn, and Macie, as well as a large circle of extended family and friends.
He is predeceased by his infant daughter Ray Elaine, parents George and Lily, and his 10 siblings – 5 brothers and 5 sisters.
Melv was a hardworking, quick witted, and generous soul known to give his last dollar as well as his last feed of moose meat. He never turned down the opportunity to dance a jig or waltz to his favourite song, The Rose in Her Hair by Simani. Melv always loved to be in the company of family and friends – the more the better.
Clipping saved by Melv and found in his wallet upon his passing:
“Remember me with smiles not tears,
For all the joy through the years,
Don’t dwell on thoughts that cause you pain,
we’ll see each other again.
I am at peace, try to believe,
It was my time, I had to leave
But what a view I have from here,
I see your face, I feel you near.
Whatever you want to do,
Do it now.
There are only so many tomorrows”
Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 25 from 6-7 p.m. from Fillatre’s Funeral Chapel, St. Mark’s Avenue. The funeral service will begin immediately after the visitation 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Jocelyn Cook officiating. To view the funeral service live stream please click the following link to register event.forgetmenotceremonies.com/ceremony?c=f391c79e-bd74-4327-8284-c4a4fabd0aeb
As an expression of sympathy in lieu of flowers the family is requesting a donation to a charity. Melv loved his children, grand children, great grand children and dogs so a donation to the Children’s Wish Foundation or the SPCA would be greatly appreciated. As a generous man a donation to any charity of your choice would also be appreciated. Thank you.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Melvin
