Obituary of Melissa Annie Houston
Affectionately known as “Miss” or “Missy”, she was raised in Ellershouse and lived her adult life in Newport Station. Melissa passed away suddenly on Saturday, July 30, 2022 in the arms of her loved ones, in the Halifax Infirmary Site, QEII, Halifax. Born on February 5, 1985 she was a daughter of Mark Porter and Deborah (Eldridge) Pulsifer.
Melissa was the most sincere, caring and humble person ever. From a young age, she not only excelled in sports and academia, she rewrote the book altogether. Melissa went on to play soccer for St. FX and then took up her stethoscope in a career in nursing, where she shared her compassion and empathy with others in need.
After the birth of our third boy, Miss found that family was her true calling. Fixing scraped knees, field trips and video games became her new passion, anything that would fill the kids hearts with joy and help form and mould them into good men. She had love in spades, even an ace up her sleeve for those three.
Melissa wouldn’t waste a minute. After the boys became school age, she wanted more for her family. Determined to be with her boy’s full time, Melissa began her own online business, leaving nursing altogether. Despite the naysayers, she made her global business a success. It grew and thrived for the past five years, providing even more fun and time. She went nonstop, never taking a second for herself. Family was everything.
Along with our kids, Melissa had a younger brother and sister. As if three boys weren’t a handful themselves, there was no way Tristan and Delaney would be left behind as far as she was concerned. People would look at us as if we were crazy when we pulled up and everyone started jumping out of the clown car. No man left behind.
Melissa touched the hearts of so many people. I believe she made this world a better place through her character alone.
Left behind to mourn her loss are her husband, Jonathan; children, Thatcher, Emmett, and Finley; parents, Mark Porter (Sonya Wilson) and Debbie (Doug) Pulsifer; sisters, Katelyn Porter and Delaney Pulsifer; brother, Tristan Pulsifer; grandfathers, William (Cheryl) Banfield and Garnet Porter (Nancy); great-grandmother, Joyce Hope; mother-in-law, Sandra Houston; brother-in-law, James Houston; step-siblings, Joseph and Nora Pulsifer; many of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and friends.
Melissa was predeceased by her maternal grandmother, Ellen Banfield; paternal grandmother, Margaret Porter; all of her great and great-great grandparents on both sides, as well as, her father-in-law, Stewart “Sam” Houston.
Arrangements have been entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). A service celebrating Melissa’s life will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, August 7, in the West Hants Sports Complex, 16 Centennial Dr, Windsor, Rev. Bill Gibson officiating. (Masks are encouraged). The family will greet with guests following the service. Family flowers only, by request. If you wish to make a donation in Melissa’s memory, please find a child who could use financial support to play a sport and help them out or donate to a charity of your choice, remembering that children always held a soft spot in her heart.
