Obituary
Melba was born in Lowick, Northamptonshire, England on April 13, 1934. She was the sixth of seven children. In 1957, Melba immigrated to Canada. She landed in Montreal with only one trunk of personal items and then travelled to Calgary on the train, where she met a sister who was already living in Calgary. Melba never returned to England.
In 1961 she met and married Joseph Derkach. In 1968, Melba became a Canadian citizen.
Joseph and Melba travelled and lived in numerous places in the United States and Canada. In 1997, they settled in the town of Nanton. They were both certified barbers. Melba also studied and completed a beautician course and took a typing course.
She was an avid reader and enjoyed learning her whole life. She had many books of health and wellness, as well as other topics. Up until her last year, she was very healthy and fit. She walked a lot – all around town, sometimes multiple times a day!
After Joseph passed away in 2004, Melba adopted three cats. The cats were her life and were cared for better than some children!
Being a very independent little lady, Melba lived in her own home until a fall in July 2022. She then entered a long-term care facility until her passing.
She was predeceased by four of her sisters, and two brothers as well as her husband Joseph.
Melba will be lovingly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews in Canada, and in England. She will also be remembered by many friends in Nanton and the surrounding area, all of whom she considered to be her family.
