Maxime d’Eon
1928-2022
Maxime Joseph d’Eon, 94. We sadly announce the
passing of a loving husband and unselfish father, on September 16th,
2022, at Villa Saint-Joseph du Lac, Yarmouth, N.S., surrounded by his
family. He was born in Middle West Pubnico, NS, on August 16,
1928.
Survived by his wife of 70 years, Eleanor (Morton), Yarmouth;
sons Rory (Janice) Ancaster, ON.; Anthony (Christine), Middle West
Pubnico; and Clyde (Dr. Jacqueline), Argyle; and daughter
Gretchen (Michael), Upper Tantallon.
He was known as Grampy or Grandpère to his
grandchildren Michelle Hunt, Sarah Klassen, Suzanne Zappia,
Félix d’Eon, Jamie Amirault, Brandy
d’Eon and Shelby d’Eon. He was Great Grandfather
to Mason, Emily, Domenico, Lucy, Emmett, Renée and
Summer. He will also be missed by many nieces and nephews and
their families.
He’s predeceased by his parents Landry and Mary
Odelle; brother Delphis; and sisters Elise Thompson, Julia Zampy, Rita
Surette, and Blanche d’Eon.
He was a hard worker and wonderful family provider. For most
of his life he was a lobster fisherman in the winter and spring,
and conducted mackerel and herring fishing from a weir on
Johns Island every summer in partnership with his brother Delphis. The
weir sometimes caught valuable salmon and the occasional
bothersome tuna. He sold fresh and smoked (from his smokehouse) fish
door-to-door, cultivated and sold rhubarb, and grew the most delicious
hydroponic tomatoes.
Known for his many skills, he was a great carpenter and
cabinet maker, building a few pieces of cherished furniture for his
home. He loved to take his family and relatives out
handlining. He also travelled Atlantic Canada in search of different
varieties of Irish moss. And, he still found time to be a
member of the Knights of Columbus.
After his fishing career, he became engaged in what was to be
the highlight of his working life—employed as an inventor at
Acadian Sea Plants, Charlesville, NS, where he created a pond
aeration system, and an innovative moss cutter and drying machine that
were essential contributions to the business’s
survival.
After retirement, he became an avid ham radio operator (VE1
EON) enabling him to keep in touch with friends and acquaintances
far and wide, and repaired sewing machines for the greater
Pubnico Area.
Finally, a very special thank you to all the dedicated and
caring staff at Villa Saint-Joseph du Lac. Their compassion during
this difficult time was greatly appreciated by the d’Eon
family.
The family would like to welcome everyone wishing to attend,
to a graveside service at 2pm on Friday, September 23, 2022 in St.
Peter’s Parish Cemetery, Middle West Pubnico
