Swift RN, Maureen
1937-2022
Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, Maureen (Connolly) Swift passed away two days after her 85th New Year’s Day birthday, supported by her loving family.
Maureen is survived by her devoted soulmate of 61 years and best friend Tom, son Patrick (Julie) of Cornwall, daughters Colleen MacDonell (Glenn) of Cornwall, Charlotte MacFarlane (Clark) of Owen Sound, Catherine Ianni (Joseph) of Cornwall. She is also survived by her beloved brother Gregory Gillis (Diane) of Fredericton, N.B. Predeceased by parents Leo and Lillian Connolly and 9 siblings. She will be sadly missed by grandchildren Justin, Cullen, Hannah, Sean, Meredith, Lauren, Ronald and Madeline.
Nursing was a vocation for Maureen. A graduate of Hotel Dieu School of Nursing in Kingston, Ontario, Maureen worked briefly at Hotel Dieu Hospital and St. Joseph’s Villa in Cornwall. After working in institutions, she shared her warmth, compassion, and skill at the community level as a visiting nurse with the Victorian Order of Nurses. During this employment, Maureen’s dedication was deeply appreciated by her patients.
Maureen’s compassion and caring extended to all areas of her life, including her faith. Always active in church work, Maureen was a Charter Member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Women’s League and served as President for several terms. In addition, for fourteen years she co-ordinated and taught in the parish Religious Education program, preparing children to receive their sacraments.
Maureen had a free-spirited nature. This characteristic allowed her to connect easily with children and to put adults at ease. Her spontaneity, energy, and creativity endure in her beautiful paintings.
Maureen’s empathy and hard work made her a strong leader in the community and a loving family member. Her character will live on through her friends, family, and the various people she touched throughout her life.
Our thanks to the staff at Sandfield Place who treated her like family for years. She was loved for her grace and humour.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Connolly Bursary in Nursing (unb.ca/giving ph:506-453-5053), Sandfield Place Resident Council or Cornwall Hospice would be appreciated.
A Memorial mass will be held at a later date at Blessed Sacrament Church, Cornwall, ON. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Wilson Funeral Home, 822 Pitt Street, Cornwall, ON (613-938-3888). Messages of condolences may be left at www.wilsonfuneralhome.ca
