Mattea Jace Somerville, age 12, passed away unexpectedly in her sleep on Monday June 6 2022 at her home in Guelph, Ontario.
Mattea was born on January 2, 2010. Beloved ray of sunshine to parents Jake and Michelle Somerville. She is the fiercely protective older sister of Dash, the adored granddaughter of Doreen Roussy and best friend to her cats, Remy, Leo, Oslo and Anders, and dogs Bodhi, Bronx and Irwin. Mattea is loved by her cousins and extended family, and was a loyal friend to so many. To know her was to love her.
She was an old soul with a joyous, tender heart – empathetic, sentimental and incredibly thoughtful, lighting up the room with her warmth and energy. She had an amazing gift of making those in her presence feel seen and appreciated.
Mattea loved animals and had a special connection with her pets. There was always a cat in her lap. She loved her friends and could usually be found making funny videos with them, playing outside in the neighbourhood and gaming online with her “besties.” Mattea was crafty and creative in all her endeavours, and especially loved making rainbow loom bracelets. She was our little micromanager who never wanted to miss out on anything.
She loved watching “Stranger Things” and “Schitt’s Creek,” movie nights, karaoke and exploring in nature. She was always listening to music and we’d often hear her singing in the shower. She was a natural water baby, a strong swimmer and loved going to the beach. Mattea always had us laughing with her impressions, hilarious observations and love of surprising us. She usually had a scrunchie in her ponytail or around her wrist. Mattea had dreams of becoming a makeup artist and hairstylist working alongside her dad.
She will be remembered for her kindness and activism within her community. She joined her school’s GSA, and loved celebrating Pride every year with her family, friends and community. Mattea did whatever she could in her twelve years to make this world a better place for everyone.

Mattea’s Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday June 25, 2022 at Westwood Public School in Guelph. The ceremony will start at 11:00am followed by a reception for all of us to laugh and cry together as we honour Mattea’s beautiful soul.
As this will be a large gathering, Mattea would want to keep everyone safe so masks are required indoors.
Attendees are encouraged to wear their favourite colourful outfits, as well as think of their favourite memory of her to write down at the event.
