MARY HAZEL VAN PATTER (Medland, née Stewart) December 30, 1928 – November 17, 2022 Mary passed away peacefully at Campbell House Hospice in Collingwood, Ontario at the age of 93. Predeceased by her first husband, Tom Medland (2016); second husband, Terry Van Patter (2018); daughter, Jan Martin (2019); and grandson, Dylan Jackson (2020). Survived by her children, Wendy (Richard) de Candole, Tom (Jan) Medland, Margot Nimmo, Jack (Sue) Medland; son-in-law, Ken Martin; stepchildren, Ross (Susan Gibson) Van Patter, Leslie (John) Booth, and Susan Van Patter; as well as 17 grandchildren and 16 great- grandchildren. Mary was the daughter of RBC Bank Manager John Stewart and Irene Legate, and with John’s work they moved frequently. She was born in Toronto and after her father’s death returned there where she graduated from Lawrence Park, attended Shaw’s Business School and worked for Imperial Life. In 1951, she met Tom Medland and they married within the year. With their five children, they lived in Toronto, skied at Craigleith Ski Club and summered on Lake Rosseau. Mary enjoyed sports, volunteered at CNIB, took up figure skating and auto mechanics and studied at York University. After Tom and Mary divorced, Mary met Terry Van Patter and they married in 1976. When Terry retired in 1988, they moved to Craigleith to enjoy sports, bridge (Silver Life Master) and travel. Mary and Terry were proud of their large combined family and they all shared happy times at Craigleith and at Esther Island, Georgian Bay. Mary will be remembered for her quick wit, love of life, boundless energy and cheerfulness, and the mischievous twinkle in her blue eyes. The family wishes to thank everyone at Campbell House for their compassionate care of Mary.
