Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Sophia, beloved wife of the late Frederick (1997). Mother of Virginia Reade (late Bill Reade) and William Shonbeck (Mary Jane). Grandmother of Nicole Burke (Bryon), Andrea Finlay (Keith), Lisa Shonbeck and Bart Edmonds. Great-grandmother to Alyssa, Sabrina, Emerson, Angelina, Lydia and Cedric. Predeceased by her parents Percy and Luella Baker, brother Don (Dorothy) and in-laws Bev and Fred Arnold. Survived by her sisters Erla Martin (late Doug), Shirley Yent (late Ron) and Jean Birt (Earl). Also survived by many nieces and nephews and cousin Bill, Jenn and Heather Clark of England.
Mary was born and raised in Jordan Station and moved to Stoney Creek, living on Harrison’s nursery farm for many years where she met Fred. They had a very active life living in Hamilton, Galt and St. Jean sur Richeleau, Quebec before returning to Ontario where they built their home in Freelton. During this time Mary was the ‘Founding President’ of the Freelton Chapter of IODE. Mary was a member and active volunteer often along with Fred in the Freelton United Church, Flamborough Horticultural Society, Bruce Trail, Iroquoia Section and at both the Provincial and National IODE Chapters. Mary loved her church, choirs and taking photos. Her nickname was ‘Smile for Mary’ as she catalogued many events.
There will be a private interment at Woodland Cemetery. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Mary’s Life will be announced at a later date. Thank you to the kind and caring staff at CAMA Woodlands LTC; Mothers’ home for the past 8 years for providing music, activities, meals, care and so many pleasant experiences. The family would appreciate in lieu of flowers in Mary’s memory that a donation be made to IODE Ontario or the Alzheimer Society of Hamilton Halton.
