Mary Shabatowski February 25th 2022

On February 25, 2022, Mary Hudyma passed away at the age of 79 years in Medicine Hat. She was predeceased by her parents, Karl and Eugenia Hudyma, as well as her brothers and sisters. She is survived by her daughter, Nattie Darnell and husband, Dan Darnell; as well as her son, Patrick Shabatowski and his wife, Denise Shabatowski; grandchildren, Natasha and husband, Bob, Natalie, Nathan, Nicole; great grandchildren, Harley, Hayden, Hudson; as well as cousins and nieces and nephews. Mary Hudyma (Shabatowski) was born in Gronlid, SK to Karl and Eugenia Hudyma on July 10, 1942. She was the fourth child of six children. Her dad decided to move the family to Saskatoon so that his children would have the opportunity to go to university or at least have more opportunities than at the farm. Mum’s time in Saskatoon was filled with much pleasure and some unstoppable sadness. Her pleasure came from both high school and the teacher’s college. Mum also found happiness in her marriage to Peter Shabatowski. This union brought her a lovely baby girl she named Nattie Gene. Sadness came when her mother passed away while she was in high school. This event entrenched in her that family was a number one priority in her life. After a period of time mom moved her family to Prince George; the first move in which would start a lifestyle of not staying in one place. In Prince George, she made many friends and was a part of the Ukrainian community, which she worked to share its cultural richness with the people of Prince George. While living here, she had a second child a son named Patrick Karl, who is an active boy that she loved. Mum also had other pursuits at this time in her life including growing mushrooms large enough they could be put into a toaster and toasted. She also had her two younger siblings live the house who were Godfrey and Dorothy. She even had her cousins, Paul and Dennis, live in basement suite. Then her family moved to Kamloops, BC and again took part in the Ukrainian community there. After Kamloops she moved her favorite part of BC, Abbotsford and the Fraser Valley. Mum was one of the founding members of the Ukrainian society which she took a lot of pride in. One move later, she moved to a farm by Bow Island. She made friends there and participated with farm work which meant looking after livestock, driving a tractor, and hauling grain. From the farm, she moved into the town of Bow Island. After Bow Island came Redcliff. During this time, mum had her own business making perogies in which she supplied different merchant’s. Again, mum opened up her house to family and then always welcomed her grandchildren. Time was well spent both by Grandma and her grandkids. Both Grandma and the grandkids spoke affectionately of each other and to this day are very close. Mums next move was back to Abbotsford, BC, during this time she participated in square dancing. She also had the opportunity to go Ukraine with her cousins. While there, she travelled to see Kiev and Liviv and also meet family members. Later, Mary divorced and then moved back to Kamloops where her brother, Godfrey, lived. During her time in Kamloops, mum opened her life to make more time for family members and her great grandchildren; she was proud of her family. She enjoyed going for coffee with her friends and her square dance group, another part of her life was the church. In 2017, her brother passed away, but she soldiered on. When Covid came and then she needed hip replacement surgery, she slowed down feeling depressed and lonely. She moved again, her final place to enjoy in Medicine Hat was short. She had family around her and again she had plans that she started, but sadly the Lord took her into his arms on February 25, 2022.
