Mary Margaret Glover 1928 2022

Obituary for
Mary Margaret Glover
Mary Glover passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre with family by her side. Mary was born in Hopefield, PEI, to Alexander and Suzannah (Buchanan) MacGregor. She completed her early schooling in Mount Stewart before attending Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown. After graduating from Prince of Wales, she attended Mount Allison University graduating with a B.A. and later completed her B.Ed. from University of New Brunswick.
Mary married Stanley Glover of Mount Stewart on April 4, 1953. In 1955, their first daughter, Carolyn was born in Charlottetown. Later, Mary and Stanley, with their young daughter moved to Dartmouth, NS. Mary continued her teaching career there at Prince Arthur Junior High School and Dartmouth High School. Two more daughters followed, Kathleen (1958) and Margaret (1962). She retired from teaching in 1984 after which Mary and Stanley moved to Martin’s River on the south shore of Nova Scotia.
Mary was a skilled and dedicated teacher and taught in many settings, from one-room schools in rural PEI, to the Normal School in Charlottetown, to high school mathematics in Dartmouth, NS. She constantly strove to improve her teaching skills taking summer courses at Harvard on teaching mathematics. Although teaching high school math represented the majority of her teaching career, a highlight for her and our family was the four years she was principal of the elementary school in Ellerslie, PEI, from 1969 to 1973, teaching grades 6, 7 and 8 in one classroom.
Mary dedicated many hours to raising her daughters ensuring they had every opportunity for both curricular and extracurricular activities. In her spare time she took cooking and tailoring courses, made beautiful clothes for her daughters and quilted. Everyone in the family has a quilt to remember her by. Another great love of Mary’s was bridge and during retirement she played socially and in three different competitive leagues. She nurtured many friendships through this activity.
Mary had a strong Christian faith attending church in whatever community she lived. When her family was young, she taught Sunday school and led Brownie/Girl Guide groups and was an active member of the UCW. In retirement years, Mary and Stanley attended the Bridgewater Baptist Church where she participated in WMS serving in various leadership roles. A few years after Stanley’s passing in 2000, she moved to Truro, NS, to live with her daughter, Kathleen and family. There she was an active member of Immanuel Baptist and Truro Heights Baptist churches. Mary made many friends through her church family and was valued for her leadership and participation in small group studies, bible studies, WMS and a variety of church activities requiring volunteer support.
Mary had an ongoing interest in local and world events and it was extremely important to her to stay informed reading newspapers and listening to the news. It was also very important to her to stay connected with family and friends. She made time to bring her children to visit relatives on PEI homesteads and also extended family in Boston.
Mary was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Stanley and her brothers, William “Bill” and Stephen. She is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Carolyn (Jim) Evans, Kathleen (Yousef Papadopoulos), Margaret; grandchildren, Andrew and Elizabeth Evans and Alexander Papadopoulos and many nieces and a nephew.
The family would like to thank her team of caregivers, especially Marilyn McNeil, Judy Moore and Becky Main, whose dedication and caring made it possible for Mary to stay with her family for so long.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro, where the family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm on Monday, March 21st. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, March 22nd in Truro Heights Baptist Church. The family has asked that masks be worn for both events. Private interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to donate in her memory may support Truro Heights Baptist Church, the Mount Stewart Cemetery or charity of choice.
