Obituary
Mary Jane Oliver (née Gegear). Passed away on July 23, 2022 in her 81st year. She is survived by her beloved husband of 49 years, Alan Oliver, her children, Mary Ann and Susan (Lorna and Melissa), grandchildren Zoë and Eleanor, Amelia and Simon, (Ben, and Samantha), sons-in-law Niall and Stephen (John and Al). Her sisters Laurie and Margaret, brothers-in-law, Emile and Ian, and sister-in-law, Sandra. She was pre-deceased by her beloved honorary grandson Andrew Sheldrick, her sister Jackie, her brother Jimmy and her nephew Ian Jr. Jane also had a great capacity to love and to find family wherever she was. She will be missed and remembered by The Wigle family, Judy Armstrong and many others in the community.
Jane grew up in Montreal before meeting her husband and moving to Toronto’s Lakeshore area. Jane’s devotion to her family saw her volunteering at Second Street school, going on class trips, sewing her daughters’ clothes (bathing suits should never be home-made), planning wonderful camping adventures in Algonquin Park at Rock Lake and providing a loving and stable home on Third Street. As mentioned, Jane and Alan seemed to have perfected the art of making friends into family. Jane was a friend to many in our neighbourhood and our house was gathering place for people of different backgrounds and generations. In mom, a listening ear, an open door and a compassionate heart were always found.
Jane was a dedicated French teacher whose capacity to love, to teach, and to listen made her a force in the classroom and the staff room! She was loved by many students and teachers at Tecumseh Public School where she taught for many years. Kids were front and centre in Jane’s life and she always found ways to surround herself with little people. From reading stories to Simon and Amelia when they came to visit to watching countless episodes of Treehouse with Zoe and Eleanor, Jane found her true passion and calling when she became a grandmother. It was her all-time favourite role.
St. Margaret’s Anglican Church in New Toronto was Jane’s spiritual home for over forty years. She was involved in everything from organizing Christmas pageants with Cara, to lay reading to teaching Sunday school to committee work. She offered a listening ear and the gift of friendship to many members of the church community.
There will be a service at St. Margaret’s Anglican Church on Monday August 1st at 11am with a reception to follow in the parish hall.
Jane loved kids and loved reading to kids. If you would like to make a donation in her memory we would encourage you to donate to www.firstbookcanada.org
