Obituary
Mary Isabel Gaudon (nee White), the firstborn daughter of Gerard and Effie White, left this world on May 3rd, 2022 to return to her parents and her son Nicholas Gaudon. Named for her grandmother, Isabel spent most of her life as a teacher, mentor, and friend to all. Always looking for someone to rescue, support, or give guidance to, Isabel seemed to put others ahead of her own needs and made sure that every child had a meal, a smile, or someone to dry their tears. She was the ultimate cheerleader for any student who struggled or wished to get ahead. Loved by all, one might say she looked for the underdog because she believed everyone deserved a chance in life, and it pained her to see even one child left behind.
Isabel’s husband of 50 years, Clifton, was her partner in life and dance. They were usually the first and last ones to leave the dance floor at family weddings. Her daughter, Tammy (Lorne), Pinksen, was so inspired by her mother’s love of teaching that she followed in her footsteps. Isabel also leaves two sons, Craig (Christie) and Trent (Nellie). The interest of each of her children was encouraged by her, and she shared a special bond with each of them. Isabel believed in treating children with respect and love and allowing them to be whoever they made up their minds to be. She was an accepting and loving mother, incredible in many ways. She was a great role model, working full-time as a teacher and attending summer school to finish her degree while raising her family. But still, she made time for others in need. She was also a mother to many of her children’s friends and never refused a kind word, hug, or meal to any of them. Her energy was endless as nothing seemed to slow her down, and she ensured that no call for help went unanswered. Her children were her priority, and her love for them transferred to their children. She loved her five grandchildren unconditionally; Nikita, Chloe, Jasmine, Nathan, and Hope were treasures of her heart. She enjoyed every moment, making them laugh, create, and use their imaginations. From making tents from sheets for sleepovers to picnics on the beach, there was nothing she wouldn’t do with her grandkids. She encouraged their love of the outdoors and the trips to beaches, swimming, walking on trails, and making art from their findings at the beach. She smiled and lit up every time she shared a story from her time with them. This light of love carried on with the birth of her two great-grandchildren, Lexi and Lincoln.
Isabel had four brothers Melvin (Susanna), Aaron (Donna), Leonard (Pam), and Nelson (Sarah). She also had five sisters Irene (Urban), Jessie (Desmond), Philomena (Walter), Christina (Chipper), and Sheila. She made sure her brothers and sisters didn’t do without, and between baking cakes and pies and paying for music lessons, she was coaching from the sidelines, encouraging them to get an education, helping them buy houses and vehicles, and ensuring that none of her sisters was alone giving birth. She was an incredible sister to all of them and loved her nephews and nieces as her children.
Her heart was huge and needed to be for all the family and friends she loved, including her sister-in-law Marie (Ronnie) Alexander, her godchildren Candice Gaudon, Michael Hawco, and Ryan Onafrychuk, and her many great-nephews and great-nieces. No one loved Isabel any more than she loved others. There are too many to name, and there is no intent to leave anyone out, as Isabel sums it up best in this phrase from her poem entitled The Ones I love.
I can’t get them all into one sentence,
I can’t package neatly all they mean,
For the lines of words will never capture,
All they mean to me.
Mary Isabel, a teacher by heart, worked as an Itinerant with the visually impaired for several years before retiring. She didn’t rest long as she soon began volunteering her time as a board member for the former Consumer Organization of Disabled People of NL. She also offered the Roots of Empathy program to children in the school system in the western region.
The family would like to thank her care workers, Tanya Gaudet, and Crystal Simms. Because of you, Isabel could spend most of her time at home before passing. We are grateful for your support and the personalized care you provided. We would also like to acknowledge her long-time friend, Bernice Gaudet, for her dedication and support to Isabel and the family during this difficult time. She appreciated the games of crib and company on days that otherwise would have been long.
A visitation will take place on Thursday, May 5th from 7:00-9:00 PM at Russell’s Funeral Home, Stephenville. The Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, May 6th at 10:00 AM from Maria Regina Parish, Port au Port East. Interment will follow at Hillside Interfaith Cemetery.
As you take your final journey, know that our hearts are full because of your love and kindness. We will never walk your favorite trail, the Gravels, without seeing you in nature’s beauty, which you appreciated to the fullest. We will never look at another person and see them as anything less than they can be, as that is how you saw people. We will never read your favorite story, Love You Forever, without thinking of you. And when we look to the night sky, we will look for you, knowing that the star that shines the brightest pales in comparison to the light that shines through you. We will love you forever.
“The one who loves and unselfishly seeks the best for others lives in the light.” 1 John:10
