1971-2022
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary
Hazel Tower on April 8, 2022 at The Moncton Hospital after following
brief illness. Born in Saint John, NB she was the daughter of the late
Arthur and Hazel Brownell. Besides her parents she was predeceased
by brothers; Bev and Jack and daughter Carrie (1980), son in
law Terry Jaillet. She was a caring wife and best friend of 56 years
to Bruce, loving mother and grandmother, sister and friend to
many.
Mary attended Moncton High School. In 1958-1959 she was a
member of the track and field team and won many ribbons. She played on
the Fineʼs Hi Queenʼs basketball team and won the
city championship in 1958. Mary worked at Eatonʼs, Lounsbury
motor vehicle branch and head office. In 1969 after the birth of her
first child her focus was at home looking after her family. After the
death of her daughter Carrie in 1980 Mary took it upon herself to
serve and help others. She became a certified lay pastor and grief
counsellor and volunteered in many aspects in the community. In 1981
she founded the “rockers” and surrogate mothers program for
the neonatal unit at the Moncton hospital and served until
1992.
Being involved in church activities was a big part of life
for her. She loved volunteering and made it a lifelong passion for 31
years.
Her accomplishments in this area were many and included: Home
and school president and coordinator of hot lunch
programs.
She was a founding member of Salisbury Road recreation
council as well as a founding member of Block parent program for the
City of Moncton. Mary served on the board of directors Touchstone
counselling (chairperson), the Southeast Community foundation, mission
board committees. the mayors senior advisory committee founding
member, the advisory committee member Homeless initiative (HRDC
Moncton). Mary also was a volunteer with Crisis pregnancy centre
volunteer training – Shepherds Inn 2001 and counselling and dealing
with abuse in women – Freedom ministries Vermont. She was a Moncton
grief support leader an MKMBA basketball coach as well as a local TV
hostess volunteer 1975-1977
From 1995-2003 she participated and coordinated mission trips
to Odessa, Ukraine for World Hope Canada. While there she also
travelled to and visited London, Vienna, Kiev and Moldova. From
1995-1999 she was part of the Wesleyan world missions project In
Puebla, Mexico. In 1999 she was the team leader for the first ever all
women’s team on the project. She was a great inspiration and
shared her life with so many. Her favourite season was summer when she
could be out gardening and spending time at Caissie Cape and Alma, NB.
Despite being diagnosed with Alzheimers in 2014 she always showed
courage and faced everything with a smile. That was Mary. She was an
eternal optimist and never complained about anything.
She is survived by her husband Bruce, children
Mary-Beth (Jaillet) and Robert. Her grandchildren Lindsay Sherwood,
Jamie Jacques, Adrienne and Dylan Jaillet. Her sisters Elizabeth
(Petitpas), Anne (Stott) and brothers Bill (Brownell) and Arthur
(Brownell).

The family will be receiving relatives and friends at
Cobb’s Funeral Home and Cremation Center 330 Whitepine Rd.
Riverview (869-2007) on Wednesday, April 13th from 6-8pm. A
celebration of life will be held on Thursday, April 14th at 1pm at the
Moncton Wesleyan Church 945 Saint George Blvd. with a reception to
follow. For those who wish to attend, masks are required
for both events. The service will be recorded and can
be viewed by following the link on the website. Donations can be made
to the charity of the donorʼs choice. Online condolences can
