Mary Ellen (Clift) Cox – age 98, June 14, 1924 – October 29, 2022
Our gracious, beautiful mother and grandmother passed from this earth October 29, 2022. She was born in the Carter community to Ollie and Chollie Clift and attended Lyons Creek Baptist Church with her two sisters and four brothers. After marrying Wendell Cox, the two lived on the family farm in the Thorngrove Community where she was a faithful and beloved member of Thorngrove Christian Church until her death. She was joyfully employed and retired from Miller’s and Proffitt’s Department Stores, and after retirement she also worked at Belk into her 80’s. She was a personal shopper for many Knoxvillians and was stylish and beautiful. She was a wonderful cook and her family especially enjoyed her Sunday dinners. She was active in her community and enjoyed the Carter Home Demonstration Club, the Carter Homemaker’s Club. The American Business Women’s Association, and the Carter Super Seniors. She thoroughly enjoyed activities at the Carter Senior Center until her health declined. People who know her have said that they never heard her complain about anything and they never heard her say a bad word about anyone. Her favorite Bible verse, which she often said, was, “This is the day the Lords has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Left to treasure her memory are daughter Susan and husband Jimmy Davis, grandson Judd Davis and wife Nikki, and two great-granddaughters Anna Kate and Sheridan Davis. Also cherishing her memory are her devoted friends Cindy Lewis (niece), Linda Shackelford, and Ann Bartlett, loving nieces Amy Meredith, Ginger Adkins, Stephannie Harkelroad, Pam Clift, and Pat Williams, and nephew John Cox, sister-in-law Dr. Pat Cox. The family wishes to thank the caring community of Trinity Hills, both staff and residents, for their care, love and support, especially Sandy Galyon and Christine Dalton who were a constant source of strength.
The family will receive friends from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Bridge’s Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 1 with the funeral service following, Rev. Bob Emmert officiating.
