Obituary
Mary Ellen (Carey) Blinkhorn
Bras d’Or
It is with broken hearts and profound sadness that we, the family of Mary Ellen Blinkhorn, announce her peaceful passing, surrounded by her family, at the age of 81, on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, at Miner’s Memorial Manor, Sydney Mines.
Born in Bras d’Or on October 4, 1940, Mary was the daughter of the late Robert and Emma (LeBlanc) Carey. She was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Bras d’Or.
Mom had a strong faith in God right up until her illness, and so looked forward to her yearly trips to Sainte Anne de Beaupre in Quebec. She was a member of the Catholic Women’s League where she was known for a “good hot cup of tea”, and the Bras d’Or Seniors and Pensioners Club.
If you had the pleasure of knowing our mother, you knew she was a true caregiver, and a jack of all trades. She was an avid Bingo player and loved to dance.
Mom was married to our Dad, Joseph for 57 years before his passing in 2015. Before her retirement she worked at St. Elizabeth/Northside General Hospital in the housekeeping department where she took great pride in her work.
She is survived by her children, Adrian (Gloria), Terry (Brenda), Ronnie (Angela), and her only daughter Mary Ann (Harold Marsh). She was blessed with 11 grandchildren, Cathy Lynn (Dennis Howley), Joey (Keshia), Tony (Nelson), Vickey (Mark Shepherd), Leigh (Cynthia), Kody, Erin (Connor), Dana, Emily, Andrew and Mary Claire Marsh, and 8 great-grandchildren, Linden, Logan, Morgan, Ethan, Carver, Nicholas, Owen, and Brayden.
She is also survived by her brothers Joe (Budsie) Carey, Terrance (Sander) Carey (Joan), sisters- in-law Muriel, Margaret (Peg), Marie, Doreen, and brother-in-law Bernie. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, who she held dear to her heart.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Joseph, brothers Ernest LeBlanc, Emile, Robert, and Dennis Carey, infant grandchild George, and her special sister Mary Birchill.
The family would like to thank her caregivers Mary, Mabel, and Millie who went above and beyond the line of duty while Mom was at home, and the staff of Miners Manor, where she resided for the last 2 years, who treated her with dignity and the respect she deserved.
Now your work is done, and it is time for you to rest. Love you Forever.
There will be no visitation by request. A funeral mass to celebrate Mary’s life will be held Saturday January 22, 2022, at 10:30 am in St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or. There will be a 50-person capacity with Covid-19 restrictions and social distancing in affect. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Adult Day Program at Harbourview Hospital, or the Bras d’Or Elementary School Breakfast Program, which held a special place in Mom’s heart. Words of comfort may be forwarded to her family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
You can shed tears that she is gone,
Or you can smile that she lived,
You can close your eyes and pray that she comes back,
Or you can open your eyes and see all that she left.
Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her
Or you can be full of the love that you shared,
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember her and only that she is gone
Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on,
You can cry and close your mind, be empty, and turn your back,
Or you can do what she would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.
