Obituary
Peacefully on May 2, 2022, Martin Smolenaars passed away at the age of 80. Martin was a loving father to daughters Denise (Shawn) and Michelle (Stewart), treasured Poppa to Joshua and Mikaela and bonus grandfather to Erin (Greg), Michelle (Mike) and great-grandson Theodore. He was beloved by his siblings and proud uncle to many nieces and nephews. Always good natured and generous, he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
The third youngest of eleven children, Martin immigrated from the Netherlands to Canada with his family in 1951, settling in Baddeck, NS. With hopes of securing more prosperous employment, he moved to Ontario at age 22. It was there he later met and married his cherished wife, Diane, creating a home in Oakville where they raised their family together and enjoyed each other’s company for almost 50 years before her passing in 2019.
A jack-of-all-trades, Martin held various jobs during his lifetime, including working at a sewar company, bowling alley, golf course and taking on independent tiling work before securing a job at Ford Motor Company doing automotive assembly and body building. A life-long learner, Martin took night courses to further his education, helping him to become and engineer at Stelco Steel in Hamilton, where he was employed for 26 years until his retirement at age 60.
An avid gardener, baker, woodworker and embroiderer, Martin will be fondly remembered for his tomato growing talents, delicious apple, bumbleberry or raspberry red current pies, skilled woodwork and colourful embroidery projects.
Special thanks to the oncology care team at Credit Valley Hospital, in particular Dr. Sarah Rauth, as well as the caring staff at Ian Anderson House hospice. Private cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, May 6, 2022 from 5-7 p.m. with time for eulogies at 5:30 p.m. at KITCHING, STEEPE & LUDWIG Funeral Home, 146 Mill St. N., Waterdown.
