Martha Mary Stobbe Schroeder was born at home in Harding, Manitoba on May 11, 1932. Her grandma was a midwife and assisted with the birth. Her parents, Henry K. Stobbe and Susan Friesen Stobbe immigrated from Hierschow in the Ukraine area of Russia. Martha courageously fought a short battle with cancer and passed away peacefully with family by her side on August 12, 2022, at the Central Okanagan Hospice House.
Martha attended a country schoolhouse at Mayne & Hunter, Manitoba. After the family sold the farm and moved to the city, she attended high school in Winnipeg. She went to Briercrest for Bible School and for her Education Degree, she attended Mennonite Brethren Collegiate in Winnipeg, Tabor College in Hillsboro Kansas, and University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
Work and mission opportunities took her to the Pas in Northern Manitoba, Brandon, Manitoba, and to start up a church kindergarten in Phoenix, Arizona. After three years she went to Northern BC and taught in a native village where everyone and everything was flown in and out. Her next assignment was in Grand Forks, BC teaching kindergarten. Then she was happy to be hired by the Central Okanagan School District. Here she taught in Oyama, at Wood Lake School and lastly, Springvalley Elementary.
Her career in teaching kindergarten was suddenly interrupted with a new chapter in her life. A prayer of hers had always been, over the years of singleness: “Lord; if you want me to have a partner in life, You will have to make it very clear to me”. And so He did.
He gifted her with a wonderful friend and husband, Vic. They were able to spend 26 years together. After retirement, Martha and Vic moved to Regina to be closer to family. It was a new season for Martha which saw her gardening, harvesting, baking, cooking, sewing, quilting, painting, entertaining the grandchildren, and later on, card- making. In each hobby she displayed her beautiful talent and creativity. She made a quilt for each member of the family. Victor and Martha enjoyed travelling. One of many trips saw them take their motorhome and travel throughout Mexico. That was definitely a highlight for both. After Vic passed away, Martha moved back to Kelowna in 2014. She was able to enjoy reconnecting with family and friends and meeting new friends.
Martha will be dearly missed by her younger brother, Frank (Jean), and Victor’s family; Rick (Diane), Sharon (Dennis), Joleene; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and their families as well as special friends. Martha was predeceased by her loving husband, Victor Schroeder (2012), four brothers, Henry, Jake, Peter, and John and their spouses, her sister, Mary, a nephew, Bruce, and niece, Michelle.
A Celebration of Life Service for Martha Schroeder will be held at Everden Rust Funeral Services (1910 Windsor Road, Kelowna, BC) on Friday, September 9, 2022 at 1:00pm with a reception to follow after at the funeral home. Those unable to attend will be able to watch via a live stream link (link to follow)
