On January 28, 2022, Martha (Janet) Dolan, formerly of Heinsburg, AB, passed away peacefully just short of her 100th birthday in Edmonton.
Janet is survived by her four sons: Brendan (Dona), Dennis (Annette), Darrell (Maria) and Robert; two grandchildren, Megan and Ryan; step-grandson, Jonathan (Rebecca) Maynard; and step-great-grandson Duke. Janet was predeceased by her husband, Jim; parents, Rudolph and Pearl; two sisters, Alice and Jessie; three brothers: George, Jim, Donald; and step-granddaughter, Samantha.
Janet was born on a homestead in Frog Lake in April of 1922. Janet’s family built a general store in Heinsburg and at seven years old, Janet and her sister Alice, walked in the heat from Frog Lake to their new home in Heinsburg, driving five head of cattle and keeping them moving because the flies were bad. She met Jim at Heinsburg, AB while he was working as a bartender in the hotel in 1956 and they were married on November 7, 1958. Janet & Jim had 4 children, the youngest three of whom are deaf. They all lived together in Heinsburg for 11 years before moving to Edmonton so the boys could attend the AB School of the Deaf. Janet loved and had understanding for all people and she had great compassion for people with disabilities. Janet was a homemaker her whole life. She enjoyed being behind the scenes, always laughing and giggling and staying out of the limelight. She loved spending time cooking and baking, there was never a shortage of food and no one ever left her home hungry!
Janet raised 4 boys to be kind, loving, and compassionate men. She was a great mom who was always kind and took the time to listen and understand people. She was a true friend to everyone. After Jim’s passing in 2000, she moved to Pleasantview Place in Edmonton where she had many great friends, although Jim would always have her heart. She loved her soap operas and watching the Oilers play hockey. Her favourite hobbies were her puzzle books and clipping obituaries from the Edmonton Journal.
She always ended her sentences with a little giggle and always had a smile on her face. Janet loved life! Most of all, Janet had a heart of gold and she would go out of her way to send love to those in need. She loved her family very much, especially her grandchildren, who were her pride and joy. Janet always had a unique and special bond with her granddaughter Megan, and she talked with her grandson Ryan every Sunday, keeping up with his adventures in the Canadian Armed Forces.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Janet’s memory may be made to LoSeCa Foundation, where her youngest son, Robert, has resided for over 35 years at #1 215, Carnegie Dr., St. Albert, AB, T8N 5B1, or by clicking here. You may also donate to a charity of your choice.
