Obituary
Marion Margaret Greene of Calgary passed away peacefully in her sleep at the young age of 101 years on October 6, 2022, with all of her children physically and virtually by her side. Born on the kitchen table of her family’s home in Copetown, Ontario, she grew up in Hamilton and later Burlington, where she graduated from Central High School. She was also schooled by the Great Depression and the Second World War. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Queen’s University, followed by a teaching certificate. She taught in elementary schools in Toronto before meeting and marrying Robert Greene, a veteran who was studying to be a priest in the Anglican Church. After Bob was ordained a priest in 1954 and their first child was born, they moved to their first parish in Lac la Biche Alberta, in the diocese of Athabasca. They subsequently served in parishes in Fairview, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, and Philadelphia, before “retiring” to Calgary in 1996, where Bob served as a parish Priest in Calgary, Medicine Hat, Vulcan, and Gleichen. In their 65 years of loving marriage and in all their parish work, Marion was an equal partner and major driving force, all the while leaving Bob with the impression that he was in charge. Her faith was her foundation, which she lived through her exemplary life of service to others. For example, during their 17 years at St. Bartholomew’s in Regent Park Toronto, she ran a food bank out of their basement, answering the door day and night, always with love and compassion. Together, Marion and Bob had many adventures. Despite limited finances, they managed to travel the world, from cross-Canada drives and cruise ship vacations to multiple trips to remote Northern Malawi.
Marion was always, always there for her children and gave them unwavering support throughout her life. She ran a loving home where the welcome mat was always out for friends and strangers, invited or otherwise. She defined adaptability and was the eye of the storm, calm and fearless, fierce and resilient. Most of all, she was loving and kind and consequently much loved.
Marion enjoyed her last 5 years at Extendicare Hillcrest, where she was known as the “Queen of Hillcrest”. Her family is grateful for the loving support provided by their exceptional team workers and for the warm friendships with her fellow residents.
Marion was predeceased by her loving husband Bob and leaves her four children, David (Cindy), Michael (Sandi), Catherine (Pau), and Stephen (Frieda); six grandchildren: Aaron (Bronwyn), Stephanie, Cassandra, Miquel (Jessica), Daniel (Manuela), and John; three step-grandchildren: Kiel, Keir (Jenn), and Collin; and five great-grandchildren: Cooper, Jackson, Koleten, Miami and Harlow.
Funeral Mass will be held at St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church (509 Dundas Street E, Toronto, ON) on Saturday, October 22, 2022, at 10:30 a.m., followed by burial at St. George’s on the Hill Cemetery (4600 Dundas Street West, Toronto) at 1:00 p.m. and reception at the Old Mill (21 Old Mill Road, Toronto) at 2:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Barnabas Anglican Church in Calgary (1407-7 Avenue NW) on Saturday, November 5, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Parish Hall.
