Obituary
Marie Alice Cosman (née Winterton)
With sadness and love, the family of Marie (Winterton) Cosman announces her passing on March 2nd 2022 in West Kelowna, BC.
Marie was born in Port Arthur, Ontario on April 17, 1945 to parents Clarence and Mary Nellie (Worville) Winterton. Marie’s life began in the remote village of Port Coldwell on the northern shore of Lake Superior where she was raised in a close-knit rural village. The once thriving community, is only a memory now and it is fondly remembered by her family and by all those who once put down their roots there.
Marie will be lovingly remembered and missed by her husband Don, and her two daughters Heather (Nelson) Cobbett and Sandra (Gary) Foster; her grandchildren and extended family; Derek (Jessica) Brown, Rachel (Mitch) Groff, Garrett Foster, Lee Foster, Clint (Jacklyn) Cobbett, Caitlin Cobbett, Echo Cooper; her great-grandchildren Alison, Jainic, Mason, Avaira, Rowdy, and Jessica; her brother Gerry (Shirley) Winterton and her sister Ruth Winterton; and many nieces and nephews. Marie is predeceased by her parents, her son Bill Cosman, her sister Marilyn (Peter) Chesnick, and her brother Harold Winterton.
Marie met her lifelong love, Donald Ivor Cosman, when she was working in Marathon, Ontario at the age of 16. They married and made Marathon their hometown for their new life together where Don worked at the pulp mill. They began raising three children in Marathon and enjoyed an adventurous life full of hunting, camping, trapping and fishing. Their love of the mountains called to them and they moved to British Columbia in the 1970s and settled in Fort Nelson BC, where they built a home and continued to spend their days outside enjoying the beautiful mountain scenery. Don and Marie retired to West Kelowna, BC in 2005. Marie is known to those close to her, as the champion fish catcher. To this day, no one in her family or social group has beaten her record of a 48 inch northern pike or a 35 pound lake trout.
Marie had such a kind heart and was often in tears watching world injustices on the news. She always gave to others, especially those in need, even in tough economic times. She was an amazing cook and avid gardener; her bounty was always shared with her family and friends. She was the envy of many for her amazing garden or when winning ribbons at the fall fair for her beautiful vegetables, pickles, and preserves. In her spare time Marie loved to crochet and as such, has left a beautiful legacy of many Afghans for her family and future generations to enjoy.
As per Marie’s wishes, no funeral or memorial will be held. Please celebrate her life with your beverage of choice, in the great outdoors.
