Marian Mooney nee Careen 1959 2022

On Sunday, September 18, 2022, Marian Mooney (nee Careen), a
beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, nurse, and
friend, passed away. She was 63.
Marian was born on August 26, 1959, to parents, Gerard and
Annie Careen, Point Lance. Marian completed her Registered Nursing
program at the Grace General Hospital in 1979. She practiced in St.
John’s and Labrador City before starting her public health
nursing career in Ferryland at the young age of 25. She then went on
to serve the people of Branch, Point Lance, St. Bride’s, and
the Cape Shore, for 31 years, until her retirement in
2016.
During her nursing school days, Marian started dating the
love of her life, Len. They married in 1983 and welcomed Jeremy, the
beautiful baby boy who made her a mom, followed by Jeffrey, Jordan,
and Jamie. “The boys,” which she lovingly referred to them
as, were the other four loves of her life.
Marian was known to many as “Nurse Mooney” and was
continually noted for her professionalism, kindness, and her realistic
and practical approach. Most would agree that her role went beyond the
traditional; she often acted as counsellor, confidante, trusted
advisor, and was available 24/7 to anyone who called.
Marian loved royal-watching and would have been immersed this
week in the events surrounding the Queen’s passing. She
loved the simple things in life—reading and TV (always
non-fiction: she didn’t have time for “made-up
stories”), quiet time at her window overlooking the ocean at her
home in Branch, visiting with her mom and family in Point Lance, and
road trips and vacations with her brother, Willie, and sister-in-law
and close friend, Cathy.
Marian will be deeply missed by her husband and partner of 39
years, Len; her boys, Jeremy (Kayla), Jeffrey (Rebecca), Jordan
(Rebecca), and Jamie (Courtney); her sweet little granddaughter,
Hazel; her mom, Annie; her brothers, Willie (Cathy), Gerard (Annette),
Reggie (Cathy), and Dermot (Rhoda); her sisters, Dolores (Hughie),
Bernadette (Foncy-deceased), Joan (Eugene), Rita (Roger), and Glenda
(Denis); her sisters-in-law, Catherine (Tony) and Sadie (Joey); her
brother-in-law, Eugene (Rita); her cousins and lifelong friends,
Martin, Ruth, Monica, and Geraldine; her close friends, Roma, Vivian,
and Selina; and a large circle of nieces, nephews, extended family,
friends, and the family’s many, many dogs.
Marian is pre-deceased by her father, Gerard; brother,
Walter; parents-in-law, John and Catherine Mooney; brothers-in-law,
Foncy Careen, John Mooney, Edward (Neddy) Mooney; and sister-in-law,
Nora Hogan.
The family extends warm thanks to the staff of 4 West at St.
Clare’s Mercy Hospital for their compassionate care and to
Dr. Kara Laing, Marian’s oncologist for the past 20
years.
Visitation will take place at Holy Rosary Church, Branch, on
Tuesday, September 20th and Wednesday, September 21st. A tribute to
Marian’s memory will be held on Wednesday at 7 pm. The
funeral mass will take place on Thursday, September 22nd, at 11:00
am.
Flowers are gratefully accepted, or donations can be made to
the Canadian Cancer
Society.
