Maria’s Obituary
It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Mother and Nonna. In her 93rd year, Maria Zitella passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 3rd, 2022 at Arbour Creek Long Term Care Home with her family by her side. She is survived by her daughter Enua DiFeo (Aldo) and her son Mario Zitella (Mary). She is the proud Nonna of five grandchildren Serena (Sandro DiCesare) and Carlo (Amira), Adriano, Sandro, and Mario Jr. Maria was the youngest daughter of the late Antonio and Lucia DiLoreto, and is predeceased by her siblings Laura, Domenico, Corrado, Panfillo, Donato, and Sabatino DiLoreto. Predeceased by her late husband Luigi (2002). Maria leaves behind many nieces and nephews of the DiLoreto extended families in Canada, USA, and Italy.
Maria was born on October 30, 1929 in a little town called Vittorito (Abruzzo). Maria and Luigi immigrated to Hamilton with the support of her brother Checchino in 1958. They devoted their life to caring for their children and working tirelessly to have a better life here in Canada. Hamilton proved to be a welcoming home for Maria and her family. They resided in the Rosedale area – a close-knit community in the 70s and 80s where neighbours were like family. Maria loved to garden, and proudly devoted her time to caring for her flowers and vegetables. She also was a big fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, watching almost every game and cheering them on.
Maria was a strong-spirited woman. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren’s many soccer and hockey games. She was so proud of each and every one of them. She loved going on walks, going to the Casino, and listening to her ltalian music. Maria spent the last years of her life in Ancaster, residing at Ancaster Gardens. Special thanks to her physician Dr. Lida Lagrotteria for her many years of care and support. In her later years, Maria developed the onset of dementia, however, through the exceptional care of the dedicated staff at Arbour Creek Long Term Care Facility, Maria was able to live her final years with dignity. The family would like to thank Dr. Alia Rana, Vinny, Kim, Amanda, Julie, John, and all the other wonderful nursing staff and PSWs who treated Maria with kindness and respect. Her strength and resilience as she endured this terrible disease was undeniable. We also wish to thank Roger and the late Polly Nelson, and all of Maria’s neighbours and friends at Ancaster Gardens for the support and love they showed her throughout her time there. Visitation will be held at FRISCOLANTI FUNERAL CHAPEL, 43 Barton St. E. (near James) on Sunday, March 6th, from 2:00-7:00 p.m. Vigil Prayers will take place on Sunday at 6:30p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11a.m. on Monday, March 7, 2022, at St. Anthony of Padua Church. Entombment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Burlington. As expressions of sympathy, donations made to Food4Kids Hamilton or to St. Anthony’s Church, would be greatly appreciated by our family.
