Maria da Conceicão do Rosário Gonçalves Cachola (87) of Oliver, BC passed suddenly on Sunday, December 11, 2022.
Maria will be lovingly remembered by: her husband Damiao Cachola of Oliver; son Dan Cachola (Leigh Gayman) of North Vancouver; son Don Cachola (Shana) of Oliver; and grandchildren Susannah Cachola (Timothy Boonstra), Dustin Cachola and Triston Cachola, all of Oliver.
Maria Goncalves was born December 8, 1935 in Olhão Portugal to parents José Gonçalves Charneca and Inácia do Rosário. She was the youngest of three children with Domingos and José being her older brothers. She married Damiao (Danny) Cachola in Portugal and they immigrated to Canada to start a new life.
The Cacholas became a family of three in December of 1961 when their first son, Danny, was born. Shortly thereafter they moved from Vancouver to the Okanagan Valley. It was quickly decided that the Okanagan was where they wanted to root their family and in 1967 their second son, Don, was born.
These two hard-working people put their minds to a task and worked tirelessly to achieve their goals. A successful business of tree fruits kept them busy for a good share of their lives together. After over 5 decades of fruit farming Damiao and Maria made the decision to change crops to wine grapes, and never looked back.
Maria loved to work in her vineyard and was very proud of the quality of the grapes they grew. She told family members that when she was out among the vines the daily stresses and worries melted away. She worked right through her last summer.
Maria was a doting mother, who lived and breathed for her sons, and their wellness. This care and nurturing grew exponentially and was passed on to her grandchildren with gusto. Her grandchildren were her treasure in life, and she made sure that any listener was aware.
Maria was a caretaker and her flower beds bore witness to this. Every summer her yard was a sight to behold, with blooms tucked into every nook and cranny. Life burst from every inch of soil she could find.
Maria will be missed greatly by all of those who loved her.
A private family service was held.
