Marguerite Mae Schmidt (nee Davis) was born August 12, 1940 in High River, Alberta, and resided at her family’s farm west of Cayley, Alberta. She moved to Okotoks to attend high school, then Calgary to attend the University of Alberta to become a teacher. She taught in Millarville before moving to Brooks to teach at Central Elementary School. She planned to move back to Calgary, but she met Chris Schmidt at her farewell party. She returned to Calgary for a short time, but soon applied for and got a job at Alcoma School. She and Chris were married on Dec. 28, 1970. She taught for three more years before making the difficult decision to trade her dedication to her students for a life of farming and parenting, though she continued to find many small ways to support local kids. At home on the farm, she was able to dote on Chris, her children, and the many animals that she loved. She developed a passion for gardening, and she kept her family (and half the community) supplied with fresh and preserved vegetables for many years. In addition to growing food, she planted many flowers and put many hours into making the yard a beautiful haven for her family. Marg also dedicated many hours to supporting the local school and community. Her kindness and generosity inspired all of those she knew. Over the years, and especially in recent weeks, we have heard from many former students expressing their appreciation for their time in her classroom. She is predeceased by her parents, Dorothy and Roy Davis, and parents-in-law, Karl and Marianne Schmidt; also sister-in-law Terry Davis, and brothers-in-law Eldon Lyall, Carl Schmidt, and Manfred Skiebe. She is survived by her husband, Chris Schmidt and children, Martina Metz (Gord), Ron Schmidt (Janine), and Marianne Janzen (Matt); grandchildren, Madison, Kylea, and Garrett Janzen and Jesse and Karlie Metz; also siblings, Barb Lyall, Buster Davis, Bill Davis (Carol) and Hazel Hopper (Dave); siblings-in-law Susanne Skiebe, Bill Schmidt (Helen), and Antje Schmidt. The family would like to offer heartfelt thanks to those who supported Marg in the difficult final weeks of her life, especially Joanne Anderson, Linda McAulay, and Loretta Darago, who dedicated many volunteer hours to her care. We also appreciate the excellent care she received at home from Dr. Vander Linde, Steven Ohara (pharmacist at South Shore Pharmacy), and her health care team led by Dr. Amanda Osadczuk. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, September 16 at 2:00 PM from the Brooks United Church. Rev. George Edmonds officiating. A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, September 16 at 11:00 AM at the Rainier Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to the Brooks and District Health Foundation, Bag 300 Brooks, Alberta T1R 1B3 or to the Canadian Cancer Society, 200 325 Manning Road NE, Calgary, Alberta T2E 2P5.
