Obituary
Marguerite “Herve” MacNeil
1939-2022 Florence/Sydney Mines
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Marguerite MacNeil on Saturday, February 19, 2022. Born in Florence on October 4, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Alexis and Agnes (MacInnis) Hervé of Pitt Street.
Marguerite had a passion for life always wanting to experience new things. She was a beautiful dancer, avid bowler, and keen card player. She belonged to a rifle club, rappelled from the ceiling of the Halifax Metro Centre, joined the military cadets when she was in her 50’s, volunteered to support students with special needs, made sandwiches for the Church and placed first in public speaking with the Christopher Leadership Course. She even worked as a youth club supervisor where she mentored many.
She travelled the world having been to England, Scotland, Ireland, Cyprus, Austria, Spain, Sweden, Portugal, and France and various States in the US. As a military wife, lived across Canada and Germany.
She loved her family fiercely and was the rock that made them flourish. She spent countless hours with them at the beach walking and exploring, attending numerous sporting activities and tournaments for her children and grandchildren alike.
In the worst of circumstances, she could always make you smile, make you laugh or make you feel like you were the most important person in the world. I know the hearts and souls of many were forever changed the moment this beautiful woman touched their lives.
Marguerite is survived by her beloved husband and best friend of 63 years, John MacNeil of Sydney Mines, her sisters Irene MacMillan (New Waterford) and Agnes Reid (Sydney), sister-in-law Hilda Hervé (Dartmouth), children John (Sandra) MacNeil (Torbay NL), Wanda (Victor) Grandy (Halifax, NS), and Nicole MacNeil (Halifax, NS), and grandchildren Andrew and Marissa MacNeil, Shannen and Victor Grandy, Duncan and Broghan Lougheed. Many nieces, nephews, and wonderful friends.
Besides her parents, Marguerite was predeceased by her son, Paul Vincent MacNeil, her sisters Eva Scott, Freda Devilin, Regina Jobe, Joan Coady and brothers John Alexis ‘Sony’ Hervé and William ‘Billy’ Hervé, her foster brother Wilfred Hart and a sister and two brothers as toddlers.
Special thanks to all the care and compassionate received by Cape Breton Regional Hospital staff: Emergency, Ambulatory, and Palliative Care.

I’d like to think that here and there,
When I am gone, there shall remain,
A happier spot, that might have not
Existed had I toiled for gain
That someone’s cheery voice and smile
Shall prove that I had been worthwhile,
That I had paid with something fine,
My debt to God for life divine.
