Margot McGrath McElligott (nee Wallace)
1941-2022
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Margot McGrath McElligott on June 26, 2022, peacefully in her home.
Margot was born in Haddington, Scotland on July 3, 1941 to Sally Ann Orr and John Scott Wallace. Margot grew up in England before moving to Ontario as a young adolescent; she is pre-deceased by her parents and two brothers, Billy and Ian.
In 1961, Margot married Raymond James McElligott. They shared many happy years as business partners and travel companions (including two epic round-the-world voyages) until Ray’s death in 1997. Margot was the manager of their many successful business ventures, forged by a high school teacher and a woman who refused to settle for the role of “stay at home mom.” Margot is survived by sons John and Cameron and by her grandchildren Travis, Scott, Tianna, Bradley, and Katie as well as great-grandchildren Adelaide, Xavier, and Amiyah. Pre-deceased by her “adopted son,” Brian Nickel (Tracy); beloved aunt of Samantha and Jonathan, and the most recent addition to the family, Elijah Brian.
Always up for a good laugh, Margot will be remembered by her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, neighbours, tenants, cottagers, and friends as a strong, compassionate go-getter. Margot loved to garden, or “play in the mud” as she called it, to sit down for a good long chat, and to be of support to neighbours and family. Staff of the Royal Henley Retirement Community will remember Margot as “a remarkable woman who brightens your day right up and leaves a happy mark on your soul.” Sincere thanks to Dr. J and the staff at the Royal Henley for their dedication, care, and patience. Deepest gratitude to Tracy Nickel for her tireless attention to Margot’s needs and her warm and caring companionship, especially over the past few years.
The family will hold a private service.
