In Celebration of
Margaret Kenyon Stokes-Rees
August 14, 1920 –
February 2, 2022
With heartfelt sorrow and respect for a life well lived, the family of Margaret (Lewis) Stokes-Rees share the sad news that our wonderful mother passed away peacefully on February 2, 2022, in the Royal Victoria Hospital with family by her side. She reached the grand age of 101.5 years.
Margaret was born in Blackheath, UK in 1920. She was pre-deceased by her husband Rowland H. Stokes-Rees, older sister Phyllis Watson, older brother Peter, stepdaughter June Phillips, and her beloved eldest grandchild, Christopher. She is survived by sons Paul (Anne) of Sheffield, ON, and Jim (Mary) of Saint John, NB, as well as grandchildren Tim (Esther), Jane (Tim Stewart), Christopher’s widow Tasha, Ian (Emily), Andrew, step grandchildren Sabrina Gwynn and John Phillips, great grandchildren Jessica,
Thomas, Alexa, Maggie, Hilary, Beatrix and Gwyndolyn.
As a young woman growing up in England, she attended Cheltenham Ladies College and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. During WWII, she was a volunteer driver with the MTC (Mechanised Transport Corps). Margaret and Rowland moved to Canada shortly after the war and eventually settled in Westmount where Margaret lived until she passed away.
For many years she was the head of admitting at the Royal Victoria Hospital and then assistant to Dr. Attia at the Montreal General Hospital. Later in life the Manoir Westmount became her home for 18 years. There she made many friends and participated enthusiastically in a full schedule of activities. She was much loved by staff and residents alike. Margaret’s loved music and was a superb pianist. Manoir residents were treated to her talent when she played the grand piano during Happy Hour!
Margaret always took a great interest in her grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and never forgot their birthdays. She was a great role model for us all with her resilience and courage matched by wisdom, intelligence and dignity. She remained to the end a person of great elegance.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be planned.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Manoir Westmount Foundation/Fondation Manoir Westmount. manoirwestmount.ca/
