Droughan, Margaret Ann (nee Brick)
July 24, 1928 – August 2, 2022
With love, joy and sadness we say good-bye to our mother, Margaret Ann Droughan, who died peacefully at her home in Dundas, Ontario.
Margaret was born in Hamilton to Robert and Laura Brick. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 55 years, John (Jack) in 2008, her brother Jack, and her sister Marie Curtis. She leaves behind her 4 children – Laura, Mark (Lisa), Robert (Carolyn), and Patrick (Robyn). She will be fondly remembered by her grandchildren Hailey, Aidan, Brennan, Amelia, Kelsey, Nicholas, Samantha, Johnathan, and Kayla.
Margaret was the head of the “Seven Fs” club – Faith, Family, Friends, Fashion, Flowers, Florida and the Phone. She was a member of St. Joseph’s parish for over 85 years. She had an unwavering faith in God and the rosary was a commitment she honoured each day. Family meant everything to Mom. She was the hub of our wheel, keeping in touch with everyone’s lives and sharing family news amongst us. Mom had many dear friends, some nurtured from her school days, and always made space in her life for new friends of all ages who she met later in life. She made friends wherever she went. Anyone who ever knew Margaret would know that one of her greatest passions was to go shopping. Her sense of fashion and style was an inspiration. She always took pride in her appearance, and liked to wear coordinated outfits – accompanied by beautiful jewellery. Fresh cut flowers and plants were a constant in Margaret’s home. Despite not having a green thumb, she had a great appreciation for a beautiful garden or flower arrangement. For almost 30 years, Margaret enjoyed her winter home at the Landings in Fort Myers, Florida, where she made many more friends and spent many hours supporting the local retail economy. For a woman of her age, our Mom had the largest number of phone contacts than anyone in the family. Her landline was her lifeline – she had a phone in every room to ensure she never missed a call. In addition to phone calls, for a special celebration there was always a greeting card. She got immense pleasure from reading and selecting the ideal card for every occasion.
Our amazing mother always had a lot of “get up and go” – she loved an outing, she always enjoyed the company of other people and within minutes of meeting you, would know your whole life story. As a Beulah Avenue resident for over 57 years, she was often regarded as the “Queen of Beulah”. On a fine day, you would invariably find her seated in her favourite chair on the front porch, where she would invite you to sit, have a drink and a good chat. Despite her most recent significant health issues, she maintained an amazing sense of humour. She was vivacious, gracious, generous and an inspiration to many people. We will miss sharing in her favourite things – such as chocolate (any which way), coffee (“so good”), Werthers candies (original only), arrowroot cookies, dining out, and classical music.
We give thanks for the blessing of having her in our lives and being able to recently celebrate her 94th birthday.
Visitation will be held at the P.X. DERMODY FUNERAL HOME, 796 Upper Gage Avenue, Hamilton, on Monday August 8 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church (Locke St. S. at Herkimer), Hamilton on Tuesday, August 9 at 11 a.m.
As much as Mom loved flowers, per her wishes, please – no floral tributes. In lieu, memorial donations in Margaret’s name may be made to Good Shepherd, 400 King St. W., Hamilton, On L8N 3R1 (www.goodshepherdcentres.ca), Hamilton Food Share, 339 Barton St., Stoney Creek, ON L8E 2L2 (www.hamiltonfoodshare.org/), Sisters of the Precious Blood, 154 Northcliffe Ave., Dundas, ON L9H 7L9.
