Marcellina Battagin

Marcellina was born October 12, 1933, the daughter of Adriano Bosa (1905-1934) and Amelia Gazzola (1906-2004). She grew up in the rural community of San Zenone, Italy. She often referred to the little red church on the top of the hill beside her home; this, no doubt, was the onset of her devotion to the church and tradition. The family grew to include seven siblings (Imelda, Emilio (passed), Adriana, Giuseppe, Guido, Maria, and Jiovanni). None of them closer than her sisters. Maria worked hard to over come technology and geography to stay connected, and Imelda was her life long friend and companion.
Marcellina bravely left the only home she had ever known to join Pietro (1921-1997) in Canada in 1955. It was the start of a marriage that would span four decades. She became deeply rooted in a community of family and friends in Port Credit. She raised her sons Andy (Lisa) and Adrian (Christine) with a beautiful mixture of tradition and freedom.
A new gold standard for grandmothers was set when Marcellina became a Nona. Her joy for grandchildren was measured in her heart. Kyle, Dominique, Taylor (Maria), and Danniella all knew they were her most precious thing. They take with them her indelible lessons about the importance of family, hard work and a clean house. In the last couple of years, God blessed her with three great-grandchildren, Michael, Brayden, and Ali. Pictures of these three smiling faces graced every surface of her home.
Marcellina was always a woman in the service of others. She cooked elaborate meals. Everyone’s favourites were on the table each Sunday. Not only was her garden beautiful, but she could often be seen sprucing up her neighbour’s gardens as well. Whoever said, “you wouldn’t be remembered for a clean home,” never met Marcellina; her freshly waxed slippery floors were the stuff of legends. When a loved one moved into a new home, moved out of a home, was working too hard, or simply needed a boost, she could be found – in a pencil skirt – on a ladder, on a table, and sometimes even on a roof, adding the sparkle a good cleaning brings. But most notably, she will be remembered for the compassion and time she gave those struggling with illness and the warmth she showed everyone else.
Any animal that passed Marcellina’s threshold was better for the experience, spoiled but better. She took the time to rehabilitate a shadow cat, nurse squirrels and chipmunks back to health, and fed neighbourhood dogs a little bit of ice cream every time they escaped their yards. And to the delight of local vets, she gave every pet in the family a much-needed reprieve from whatever diet they were on.
We will remember her smile, her warmth, her energy, her love for life, family, and friends. She worked hard all through her life. She made a difference in the lives of many. So we invite you to join us and remember her together.
