HULL, Madge Catherine (nee ENGLISH)
October 8, 2022
Madge Hull passed away in Red Deer, Alberta on Saturday, October 8, 2022, at the age of 104. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Peggy Benson and Barbara Coulter (Tudor); her grandchildren, Elysia Benson and Rodney Coulter; her great-grandchildren, Staci Hastings and Ryan Coulter.
Born at Silton, Saskatchewan March 25, 1918, Madge was predeceased by her parents Burton Cleon English and Louisa Florence (Madge) English. Madge was also predeceased by her husband Thomas John Hull and by her siblings Clayton Grafton English, Bernice Alice (English) Colongard, Burton Cleon English, Louie Marion (English) Wright and Shirley Meredith (English) Ernst.
A good education was highly prized by Madge. After completing her teacher’s training following her high school graduation in 1938 Madge continued to educate herself for many years adding a Bachelor of Teaching degree in 1971, a Bachelor of Arts in 1973 and a Bachelor of Education in 1975.
Madge married Thomas John Hull of Nottingham, SK on July 9, 1945, in Regina Saskatchewan. Her husband Tom was born at Carievale, SK December 31, 1906, died in Red Deer, AB, March 22, 1999.
Madge and Tom farmed in the area of Alida Saskatchewan before buying a general store at Nottingham, SK which they ran for several years until they returned to farming on land a few miles west of Virden, MB. After selling the farm they briefly lived in Virden before moving to Brandon where they resided until the late 90s.
Madge was a long-time teacher with a career spanning 51 years. Madge taught at ‘one room schools’ in rural Saskatchewan and Manitoba. She retired from full-time teaching at age 74 to move to Red Deer along with her husband Tom. All her life and even more so in retirement Madge was an avid gardener especially interested in growing fruit. Starting with a “bare” city yard she developed a garden full of varied fruit trees, roses and a bounty of perennial flowers.
Madge passed her strong values around hard work, being productive and always striving for a goal to her children and grandchildren. Her focus in life was on her family and she was always the “teacher.”
With family support Madge was able to remain in her own home until over the age of 104 and enjoyed looking out her living room window at the day’s happenings. Madge moved into facility care in June 2022. Madge’s family wish to express thanks to Harmony Care Home staff (Red Deer) who gently cared for her during her last few months of life and eased her passing for her family.
A gravesite Celebration of Life will take place at Alto Reste Cemetery Red Deer on Thursday October 13, 2022 at 2:00 pm.
