Our mother, Lynda Calder, passed away peacefully in her sleep enveloped in love on December 31, 2021 at Glen Hill Terrace in Whitby, ON, at the age of 74. Lynda moved around when she was growing up, living in Hamilton, Timmins, and Toronto. She finally settled in Oshawa, ON, where she raised her two children and worked as a dedicated civil servant at The Ministry of Finance in the Motor Fuels and Tobacco Tax branch. Definitely a cat person, she survived cancer and a slew of other health issues, only to have finally exhausted all her nine lives.
Lynda loved nature, gardening, and collecting Christmas nutcrackers, and she cherished her time babysitting her granddaughter Keira when she was little. Our mom was a kind, loving, gentle soul with a soft smile who loved helping and taking care of people. Although life did not give her the luxury of travelling the world, it was always a dream she held onto.
Her favourite film was Star Wars, which she introduced Janeen and Michael to when it first came out. She even exchanged waves with John Lennon before The Beatles’ first concert at Maple Leaf Gardens in 1964. She could often be found devouring mystery novels or enjoying detective, forensic science, and cooking programs on television. One of her favourite traditions was giving Christmas pajamas to Keira, Tyler, Hannah, Carter, and Abby.
Lynda will be missed by: her daughter Janeen Rowsell (Darryl), of Newcastle, ON; her son Matthew Calder, of Waterloo, ON; her granddaughter Keira Rowsell, of Newcastle, ON; her sister Kathy Jakiwchuk (Gus), of Orangeville, ON; her brother David Hannah (Joan), of Adelaide, South Australia, Australia; her sister Nancy Pattullo (Ian), of Pitt Meadows, BC; her sister Debra Gelowitz-Klassen (Kelly), of Chilliwack, BC; her brother Gary Hannah, of Quesnel, BC; many nieces and nephews in Ontario, BC, Manitoba, Illinois, and Australia; and her cat Binx. Lynda is also predeceased by: her mother Margaret Hannah (nee Hill), of Maple Ridge, BC; her father Roy Hannah, of Kelowna, BC; her sister Wil Hakkenbroek of Netersel, Netherlands; and her brother Brian Hannah (Marj) of Surrey, BC.
We would like to thank the staff of 3N at Glen Hill Terrace for the love and compassion they showed our mother during the last four and a half months.
Donations can be made to the Humane Society of Durham Region and flowers can be sent to Glen Hill Terrace in her name and memory.
Lynda was cremated according to her wishes.
A celebration of life will be held in the spring of 2022.
