LUBAVS Nadine 2022

LUBAVS, Nadia (Nadine) née Eluchok, on Saturday, Nov. 5 at Northland Pointe long-term care facility, Port Colborne, in her 100th year. She was predeceased by her husband August Lubavs in 1989 and by her first husband, Alex Makerewich, in 1990. She also was predeceased by her parents, Paul and Zina Eluchok, and by her sister, Helen Danyluk. Nadia Lubavs, who lived variously in Port Colborne, Welland and Lowbanks, was born in 1923 in what is now Orzhiv, Ukraine, then part of Poland, arriving in Canada in 1938 as a 14-year-old with her mother and sister, and rejoining her father in Val d’Or, Que., who had immigrated to Canada in 1930.
The family moved to Port Colborne later that year. Following school, she worked at the former Humberstone Shoe factory among other jobs before training during the Second World War as a crane operator at Page-Hersey Tubes Ltd., Welland. In later years, she was employed in health care as an RNA and in private-duty nursing at the Port Colborne General Hospital before retiring.
Her survivors include her sons, Dr. Leonard Makerewich of Niagara Falls and Brian Makerewich of Port Colborne. Also surviving are four grandchildren: David, Steven, Christopher and Cassandra Makerewich and great-grandsons Slater and Miles Makerewich. A brother, Bill Eluchok of Welland, also survives. A private family service will be held later this month at Morgan’s Point Cemetery in nearby Burnaby.
