Obituary of Louise Hughes
May 17, 1939 – Macoun, Saskatchewan
December 28, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta
Loving mother to seven, gran to thirteen, and great-grandma to two, Louise passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at The Manor at Rocky Ridge.
Louise was a maverick throughout her life and family was her Holy Grail. It was important to her to be independent, successful, have fun, explore the world, and live life to the fullest, experiencing all of the opportunities that life had to offer.
Louise was a proud matriarch to seven children, Bradley (Margaret), Jennifer, Timothy, Douglas (Heather), Randy (Sheila), Bret, and Susan (Julien). She was also a loving gran to thirteen grandchildren, Shanda (Jeff), Adam, Karleigh (Matthew), Tristan, Erin, Graham, Sydney, Sam, Colin, Max, MacInnes, Ryan, and Reese, and a great-grandma to Easton and Eloise. Louise was predeceased by her husband Ralph; her parents, Florence and Wayland; and her siblings, Wayne, Don and Gloria; and survived by her brothers, Worsel and Douglas; and sister Connie.
Louise was born in Macoun, Saskatchewan on May 17, 1939. She was a force of nature, leaping from the rural prairies to the big city of Winnipeg where she was training to become a nurse. Louise then transferred to Toronto, where she began raising a family. From there, she moved to London, Ontario and launched her successful career in Real Estate that spanned four decades. In the early 1980s, she moved to Calgary and continued her thriving business there. She also had the good fortune to meet the love of her life, Ralph Hughes. Together they raised seven kids and imparted their shared values of the importance of family, education, and hard work. She slowed down her Real Estate business to embark on another adventure in the retail business and opened a chain of sewing stores, by the name of “A Sewing Sensation”.
Louise loved to see the world and enjoyed travelling the globe with Ralph, extended family, her children, and her grandkids. Disney World was her favourite place. Many winters, Louise and Ralph spent their time in Val Vista Village in Mesa, Arizona where Louise played a vital role in organizing a place for everyone to come and enjoy quilting. That place is now known as the “Fibre Arts Center”. This culminated into the very successful annual quilt show in the park.
Her home was always open to strangers, friends, and family. She was fun-loving and had a generous heart. Louise established with her husband Ralph, a scholarship fund for single mothers attending St. Mary’s University. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to St. Mary’s University, at 14500 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, Alberta, T2X 1Z4, www.stmu.ca.
