It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Lorraine Joanna Verstraeten on Wednesday November 16, 2022.
Lorraine leaves to mourn her passing her loving husband Larry, daughter Kassandra (Nick) Sundell of Holland, MB, son Darcy Wytinck (Kelsey Cheal) of St. Alphonse, MB, grandchildren Gerry Wytinck & Theo Sundell; mother Alida Verstraeten of Bruxelles, MB, siblings Sharon (Yvon) Bruneau & Lucille (Louis) Godard of Holland, MB, brother Gordon Verstraeten of Bruxelles, MB and Anita (Robbie) Gillis of Cypress River, MB.
She is also survived by her mother-in-law Astrid Wytinck of St. Alphonse, MB, in-laws Dennis (Denise) Wytinck of Glenboro, MB, Doreen (Benny) DeRuyck of Bruxelles, MB, Ray (Kim) Wytinck of Selkirk, MB as well as numerous nieces, nephews & extended relatives.
Lorraine was predeceased by her father Albert Verstraeten, father-in-law Gerard Wytinck, nephew Orry Godard and by great niece Beth Van Den Bosch.
Lorraine was born June 6, 1956, the eldest of 5 to Albert and Alida Verstraeten. She grew up on the family farm near Bruxelles, MB where they had dairy and grain land. She attended elementary school in Bruxelles and then went onto Notre Dame to finish high school. After graduation she started working for Louise Credit Union in Mariapolis.
In October 1984, she married Larry Wytinck and they resided on the Wytinck home farm where they had dairy, beef cows and grain. Lorraine was active on the farm where she fed baby calves, combined, square baled and made all the meals for the field. In 1987, Larry and Lorraine gave birth to a son, Darcy. After Darcy was born, Lorraine worked on the farm full time and raised the kids. In 1990, Larry and Lorraine gave birth to a daughter, Kassandra. This would complete the family. Lorraine was active in her children’s hobbies. She would take Darcy to all his baseball practices, help (do) his homework and attended all of Kassandra’s violin lessons.
Lorraine was a very good baker and attended the Cypress River Farmers Market for many years. She was famous for her buns, cinnamon buns, and pies. Lorraine was very active in the community serving on many boards, the St. Alphonse Hall board, the St. Alphonse and Area Foundation, the recycling committee, and the fall dinner committee.
In 2011 at the age of 55, she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Lorraine wasn’t the kind to complain about her diagnosis. She treasured everyday and handled her treatments like a champ. She loved her family and was very close to her siblings. When the Verstraeten’s got together, there was a lot of laughing happening. Larry and Lorraine enjoyed getting away, even if it was just for night or two. They did get to go on some longer trips like Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Florida, Moose Jaw, Grand Prairie & Kamloops.
In 2021, Lorraine got the 2 greatest gifts of her life when she was blessed with 2 grandsons born 5 months apart. She loved Gerry and Theo so much and was so happy to look after them whenever she could. Even though her time with them wasn’t long enough, they will always know their Grandma loved them very much and was grateful for them.
Mom, thank you for everything you have done for your family. We know you will continue to watch over us. You will be forever missed; you will continue to live on in our hearts. We love you. May you rest in peace.
