After a short but courageous battle with cancer, Lloyd peacefully passed away on February 13 surrounded by family. Loving and devoted husband of 47 years to Charlotte, proud father of Scott Lakey (Vicky) and Heather Orr (Andy), Adam Lakey (Anna) and Amanda Lakey. Adoring grandfather of Johnny Orr and Hayden Lakey. Predeceased by brothers Lawrie (John) and Bert (Pat) and survived by siblings Cherry (Stuart), and Shaun (Penny).
Born in Bournemouth, England on September 25, 1943, Lloyd emigrated to Canada in 1964 to pursue his passion for business and culinary arts. His long and distinguished career included a variety of roles in restaurants and hotels throughout Southwestern Ontario. He took great pride in being a part of so many people’s special occasions. He often stopped for a chat or to share a memory when he saw familiar faces while running errands with his faithful dog Bogart.
Handier with a spatula than a hammer, Lloyd could often be found in the kitchen or at the grill preparing a feast for family and friends. In the summertime, he enjoyed relaxing poolside, with the fall signaling the start of the soccer season. An avid Liverpool FC supporter who never missed a game, he could be heard shouting the Reds on as if he were at Anfield in person. An enthusiastic storyteller with a great sense of humour, his laugh was contagious. He embraced life’s challenges with optimism and wit, evidenced by his reaction to his cancer diagnosis: “this is another fine mess [I’ve] gotten us into,” as he quoted Laurel and Hardy. Consistent and dependable his family came first, and he could always be counted on for practical advice. Lloyd will be dearly missed.
The family would like to thank the dedicated members of the Bluewater Health palliative team for their compassion and exceptional care during a difficult time.
Cremation has taken place. In keeping with Lloyd’s wishes, no services will be held. Sympathy may be expressed through donations to the Sarnia and District Humane Society (cheques only at the funeral home please).
