MATE, Ljudmila –
Peacefully, in her home on February 22, 2022, amongst all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Milka (Ljudmila) Mate left us for a well-deserved rest amongst prayer, singing, and sharing of beautiful memories.
Born in Jelševnik Slovenia, she spent her youth helping raise her siblings on the family farm and vineyard. In 1968, she bravely left Slovenia and arrived in Canada, meeting and then marrying Frank Mate and becoming the step mother of his two children Francesca and Franky. She soon became mother to her daughter Mary.
Milka was devoted to her family and took great pride in them. She was a role model of faith, devotion, and hard work. She loved working in her garden and always made sure that there were enough flowers to adorn the chapel at the “Farma” (Slovenian Summer Camp). Her strong faith was a guiding force in her life, and led to her rebuilding her family chapel in Jelševnik in 2012. Milka was also a skilled cook and baker and her family looked forward to her Sunday “kosilo” and strudelj every week.
Milka will be remembered as a giving person, who was dedicated to her family. She is predeceased by her husband Frank Mate and loving mother to Fran (Peter) Kure, Frank (Mary) Mate, and Mary (Robert) Kure. Cherished grandmother of Kathy (Steve), Peter, Kristina (Johnny), Robert, Karolina and Mikayla, and great-grandmother of Maya, Clara, Elaina and Johnny. Milka is survived by her brothers Lojze and John and predeceased by seven siblings.
The family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Father Leopold Valant for his ongoing support as well as caregivers, Donna, Aisha, and Laila. Visitation will be at Newediuk Funeral Home, 2058 Kipling Avenue on Sunday, February 27, 2022 from 4-8 pm, and at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, 739 Browns Line, on Monday, February 28, 2022 from 10-11 am. The funeral mass will be in the church at 11 am with interment to follow at Assumption Cemetery, Mississauga. As expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Slovenian Apostolic Circle would be appreciated by the family.
