Lionel David Feldman 1935 – 2022

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the death of Lionel on August 21st, 2022. Lionel grew up in Gravenhurst, ON, but preferred the more exciting environment of Toronto where he spent most of his adult life and where he met his wife Barbara. At the time she was on a six month working visit from England, but was persuaded to stay and they married in 1972. It was with great joy that later, in 1982, they were able to welcome their daughter Clare.
Lionel had an extremely interesting and varied life. He graduated from McMaster University, received an M.A. in Public Administration from Carlton University and did further post graduate work at the University of Oxford, England. His early work assignments included: The Ontario Committee on Taxation. Smith Report; The Royal Commission on Metropolitan Toronto. Goldenberg Report; and Peel-Halton Local Government Review; Plunkett Report. In his long career as an urban management and public policy consultant he worked with all different levels of government across Canada. His international assignments included work in Albania, Brazil, Greece, Guyana, Tanzania and Turkey. He also undertook assignments directly for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris and, under their auspices, in Athens, Barcelona, Istanbul, Madrid and Rome; for the United Nations Development Programme and the International Union of Local Authorities in The Hague.
He edited Politics and Government of Urban Canada: Selected Readings; and published many major articles and book reviews on urban government in refereed journals in Canada, the United States and England. Lionel also enjoyed part-time teaching, including lecturing at the University of Victoria, York University, The University of Western Ontario, Carleton University and Ryerson University. He took great pride in mentoring students and colleagues with their careers, was a wonderful listener giving advice whenever he could.
He was a voracious reader, very much enjoyed the theatre, film and all the arts. As well he loved to travel, particularly enjoying family holidays visiting the Caribbean, European and African countries.
He is survived by his beloved wife of fifty years, Barbara, his “favourite only daughter” Clare, a large extended family and many friends. He will be greatly missed.
Barbara and Clare extend their thanks to the caring staff at Baycrest. Their heartfelt thanks go to his wonderful personal carer, Sheila, whose help has been immeasurable.
A Funeral Service will be held at the Morley Bedford Funeral Home, 159 Eglinton Avenue West, on Thursday, August 25 at 11:30 a.m. Reception to follow. Interment at York Cemetery.
Should you wish donations can be made to The Myotonic Dystrophy Foundation or to a Charity of your choice.
