Obituary
Linda Claire Ashby passed away April 1, 2022 under the auspices of Bill C-7, Medical Assistance in Dying. Determined to leave life with the same grace and agency with which she lived it, Linda made this choice after battling on and off with cancer for almost 35 years.
A beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and cherished friend, Linda had a BA in English and was an accomplished communications executive in Northern Ontario, Peterborough and Toronto. Her leadership skills and entrepreneurial spirit were highly valued and in 1985 she earned the international designation of Master Business Communicator.
As a single parent in the 1970s, Linda raised two sons, working full time to support them while dedicating herself to their education, personal growth and sporting activities.
In 1980, Linda was blessed to meet and subsequently marry her soul mate Peter Ashby. Together they raised their beloved blended family: Tim Ashby (Cathie), Christopher Ashby (Alain), Sean Ashby (Colleen) and Todd Richardson (Suzanne). Her “grand-darlings” were of utmost importance to Linda, and she took great pleasure and pride in Lauren, Ashley, Stevie, Sophie and Zachary.
Linda and her cherished sister June were the daughters of Claire Northey of Peterborough Ontario, and raised by their devoted mother Grace Northey and grandmother Alice Cunningham. From these strong loving women the sisters acquired extraordinary resilience and life skills.
Linda was an accomplished cook and seamstress who loved creative writing and music. At Queen Mary School and PCVS she sang in the choir and played both violin and timpani, and in 1991 she self-published a small book of poetry for her friends and family.
In retirement, Linda and Peter were part of a loving circle of friends who were indefatigable in their support, especially in recent days, supplying a constant stream of muffins, soup and “always a chicken”. The Ashbys send their deep gratitude to this extended chosen family who made Linda feel so loved and appreciated.
