In Loving Memory of our aunt, Lillian Bastarache (1933-2022)
Our Aunt Lillian Tudge was born on May 23rd, 1933 in Aldershot, Ontario. Her parents were Iris and Allen Tudge, immigrants from England, and her brother was Allan Tudge (our father, deceased, also born in England). Lillian graduated from McMaster’s University. She held her first job working at the Hamilton Health Center with breast cancer patients as part of a research team. Later, she chose teaching as her profession and taught Science at Westmont Secondary School for many years. She enjoyed imparting knowledge to others. She shared her 12-acre farm in Jerseyville with her husband, Abel Bastarache, where he boarded and trained trotter horses. Abel died in 1995 and Lillian never remarried. Lillian loved living on her farm.
Lillian was the avid world traveler. Some places traveled were Peru, China, Africa, Russia, and Australia. In each of her travels, Aunt Lillian would always return with gifts from the country. As Lillian never had children of her own, she held all of her nieces and grand nieces in great esteem. One of her traditions was coming to visit her brother, her nieces and their families in California annually for Christmas.
Aunt Lillian was very active. Her hobbies included square-dancing, Scottish dancing, playing the recorder, and attending church at Jerseyville United Church where she sang in the choral group and became involved in ministries that helped people.
The main thing we will always remember about our Aunt Lillian is her engaging, beautiful smile and her quick, dry sense of humor. She loved to laugh and find life’s funny moments. She had a very pleasant personality and enjoyed meeting new friends. She was a warm, kind person, but mainly, she was very smart. She could remember every detail and fact and could practically cite the entire family tree going back years. She was like a walking encyclopedia up until the last six years of her life.
In 2017, Lillian sold her home and farm and moved to Carrington House for senior living. She was very sad to leave her home. When it finally became clear that she needed more care, Lillian spent the last year of life at Amica Retirement Home until her death at age 88 on Jan. 2, 2022.
Our dear Aunt Lillian will be sorely missed by her three nieces, Diane, Janet, and Vivian (USA), her two grand-nieces, Tillie and Sarah (USA), and her two cousins, Lorna Butler and Joyce Dohnal (Canada). We are grateful to Joyce who was kind enough to act as power of attorney over her finances for the last five years of her life. We love you Lillian.
