LANGEVIN, Leopold
Aug. 29, 1937 – April 27, 2022
After a brief battle with cancer, Leopold Langevin of Red Deer, formerly of Lac La Biche, passed away on Wednesday, April 27, 2022 at the Red Deer Hospice at the age of 84.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years, Josephine Langevin; son, Leonard Langevin of Bowden; and daughter, Juanita (Ron) Heidt of Innisfail; grandchildren, Emily (Jeff) Hemstreet of Sylvan Lake, Olivia (Corbyn) Shields of Innisfail and Ross (Melissa Brunet) Heidt of Innisfail; and twin great-grandsons, Nelson and Jacob Hemstreet of Sylvan Lake. He is also survived by his brothers, Albert (Sharon) Langevin of Edmonton, and Ovide (Yvette) Langevin of Lac La Biche, sisters Colette (George) Trachuk of Pitt Meadows, and Celine Lusher of Pitt Meadows, and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Fornari of Edmonton. He also leaves behind numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Rene and Francoise Langevin; in-laws, Secondo and Maria Fornari; brother, Gerard Langevin; brothers-in-law, Mike Lusher, Fred Fornari and Daniel Fornari.
Born on a farm in the Lac La Biche Mission area, Leopold grew up and was educated in Lac La Biche where he eventually ran a successful painting business and retail store. He also worked as a funeral director at the former Athabasca Funeral home and also worked for Alberta Housing for 30 years. Due to a transfer from Alberta Housing, he relocated to Red Deer in 1985 where he remained until his passing.
A passion of Leopold’s was music and was a popular square dance caller for many years in northern and central Alberta. He was also a musician and travelled to many jam sessions at seniors’ centres throughout central Alberta where he sang and played accordion and harmonica. He played into his final days, participating in a jam session at his home at Victoria Park on March 24.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 6 McMillan Ave, Red Deer on Friday, Mat 13, 2022 at 2 PM, with Father Mirek Kostarzewski officiating. For those unable to attend, services will be available virtually at bit.ly/llangevin.
