Leona Mabel Lightheart (1922 – 2022).
It is with great sadness that her family announces the passing of their dear Mom, Grandma, and Great Grandma. Leona just energetically and joyfully celebrated her 100th birthday on November 12th, with almost 200 family and friends in attendance. She passed away peacefully on Nov 29th with her family at her side. She was still cracking jokes to the hospital staff the day before she passed.
Leona is survived by her son Bob (Tess) and his daughter Vicki (Chris), and her daughter Judy Chamberlain (Wayne) and their daughters Susan (Drew), Cheryl (Kevin), Christine (Peter), and Kathryn (Will). She was a devoted and loving Grandma to all her granddaughters and great grandchildren Michael, David, Andrew, Zoë, Milo and Matilda.
She was predeceased by her dear husband of almost 70 years, Gordon. Leona was the eldest of nine children of David and Ruth Carver. She was the dearly beloved sister of Jean Hawkins (Lyle), Harold (Stella), and Carol Brunt (Dan). Leona was also predeceased by Rose Fish (Charlie), Evelyn Roth (Lorne), Shirley Fish (George), Ken (Lucille), and John (Mary Ann). She will also be missed greatly by her whole extended family and friends from her incredible social life.
Thank you to all her friends at Niagara Gardens Independent Care and her fellow cardsharks at Dunlop Senior Centre.
Leona worked hard all her life, first caring for her siblings, then working at Dell’s Grocery Store in Ridgeway, and at Fleet Aircraft during WWII. After her children were born, she was a Mom who was involved in every aspect of their lives. She continued working during this time as a landlord at their small apartment building, along with housecleaning, wallpapering and anything else that needed doing. In her spare time, Leona enjoyed many hobbies, including quilting, gardening in her large backyard, baking the best apple and pumpkin pies, playing cards, and travelling with her family.
Cremation has taken place. The Lightheart family will receive visitors at the DAVIDSON FUNERAL HOME, 135 Clarence Street, Port Colborne on Friday, December 9, 2022 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. Private family service and interment in Bertie BIC Cemetery, Stevensville will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Most of all, in her honour, be kind and loving to everyone you meet as that would be the most important legacy she could pass on.
