across the road, the Power’s – Wayne, Sandra, and Wayne Jr.
The family wish to thank them from the bottom of their hearts for
their care and support.
Thank you as well to the staff of Lions Manor Nursing Home
for their professional care while Leona resided there. Special
appreciation to Maggie and Samantha for their compassionate nature in
attending to Leona’s needs. Karen is forever grateful for
your comfort, care, and support.
Leona was born on Bell Island and always spoke passionately
about of her overseas roots. She raised her family in Freshwater where
she met and fell in love with her soul mate Mike, a love that has
lasted for fifty years.
Leona was a humble woman, but one would never want to upset
her or as her family would tell you, you would experience the infamous
slipper to the ass!
Leona loved music and dancing and often spent
Sunday’s listening to her favourite songs and sharing a
dance with Mike in the living room. She was known to be the life of a
party and enjoyed the company of family and friends, welcoming any
opportunity to socialize and enjoy a drink, dance and
chat.
She was an amazing, strong, and loving woman. She gave
everything she had for her six children. She enjoyed sharing the
successes of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She
loved them all dearly.
Through her many years as a caregiver and home support worker
she also developed loving relationships with many outside her family.
This included Holly and Heidi Pittman, Karen, Nancy, Gary and Frankie
Maher. She loved them as if they were her own.
Special mention to our family lawyer and friend Johnathan
Earle with Avalon Law Group. Thank you for always being
there, especially when mom, dad, and Karen needed you the
most.
Leona was a faithful member of the St. Luke’s
Anglican Church congregation, and a proud member of the Placentia Fire
Department Ladies Auxiliary and the Golden Club of Senior Citizens in
Freshwater.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Maher’s
Funeral Home, Placentia. Cremation has taken place. The family will
receive visitors from 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Sunday, September 18,
2022. The funeral service will take place at St. Martin’s
Anglican Church, Dunville at 11:00 am on Monday, September 19, 2022.
Inurnment will take place later at the Anglican Cemetery. Following
the funeral service there will be a reception at the Freshwater
Community Centre where, as per Leona’s wishes, everyone is
invited to celebrate her life in a time of fellowship and
friends.
As an expression of sympathy flowers will be gratefully
accepted or donations can be made in her memory to the Placentia Fire
Department Ladies Auxiliary or the Alzheimer’s Society of
Newfoundland and Labrador.
“Going home, going
home
I’m just going
home
Quiet light, some still
day
I’m just going
home”
