Leo John Wood
April 29, 1931 – March 9, 2022
Leo John Wood passed away surrounded by family on Wednesday, March 9, 2022 at the Glenboro hospital.
Leo leaves to mourn his children Debra (Greg) Vertz, Bradley (Debbie), Shelley (Cam) Hamilton and Kelley (James) Spellman; his grandchildren Vanessa Vertz (Patrick), Courtney Vertz (Kurtis), Kelsey Wood (Craig), Taylor (Rory) Gabor, Michelle (Phil) and Marc (Alicia) DeDecker, Jodie (David) Young, Brettlynn Wood (Shane), Andrea Hamilton, Liam Hamilton, Keelin Spellman and James Spellman.
He also leaves behind his great grandchildren Isabelle, Tyler, Evan and Travis Young; Cassidy Steppler, Adley Gabor, Laikyn Ferguson; Kayden, Owen and Evan Smart, Scarlett and Victoria DeDecker; his in-laws Jessie and Imelda Wood, Yvette Hebert, Leon Morin, Rene (Lee) Morin, André (Laura) Morin, Lorraine (Rene) Dousselare; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Leo is predeceased by his loving wife of nearly 67 years Mona; by his son Gregory and his great grandchild; parents Irene and John Wood; brothers and sister Albert (Margaret), Willijohn, Isabel (Rene) VanDamme, Lawrence (Margaret), Alvin, Aime and Gerard. By his in-laws Charles and Ella Morin; brothers and sisters in-laws Andrea (Cliff) Swenson, Charlotte (Willie) Kowalke, Tony(Marianne) Morin, Marie (Bill) Mackenzie, Romeo Hebert, Richard Morris, Yvette Morin and Viola Zachow, Wendy Mackenzie, as well as nephews Michel and Brent Morin.
Leo was born April 29, 1931 on the farm near Cypress River. He spent the most of the next 90 years growing up, living, working, being married, raising a family and taking care of the farm. He and his siblings used horses to travel to Cypress Valley School. He quit after Gr. 8 because the teachers were getting too good looking. We loved his dry sense of humour and will miss it. Dad enjoyed country music, especially Hank Williams. Dad loved to farm, mostly grain, the animals were more Mom’s thing. He loved his John Deere tractors. He loved to hunt with his brothers, brothers-in-law and friends, then with his sons, son in-laws and with his grandchildren. He shot his last buck at the age of 87. He even went out for a day last November at the age of 90. He loved to just be busy and take care of his farm, family and Mona’s cooking, especially her bread. What history we have lost. He will be greatly missed.
A Graveside Service will be held on Saturday May 14, 2022 at 1:00 pm at the St. Alphonse Cemetery, St. Alphonse, MB, with Father Vincent Lusty officiating.
