Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Leo Cody Day Chief. Also well known as Mr. Lee, a nickname given to Cody by his grandfather the late Leo Day Chief. Cody passed away unexpectedly in the Fort Macleod region on Saturday, August 13, 2022, at the age of 29. Cody was born on October 4, 1992, in Lethbridge, Alberta to Brandy Callihoo and the late Ronald “Joe” Day Chief. Cody was a loving father to his children Kynleigh Day Chief and Baby Leo Day Chief. Cody also shared a special bond with his other boys Richard and Ryder. He loved being an older brother to Rylan (Tahnee), Colton (Brooke), Alisha, Gracie, Jordan, and Madison. He adored his nephews Bentley, Beau, Briggs and his niece Harlow Sage. He shared a close relationship with his other mom Christy Day Chief and auntie/mom Stephanie Day Chief.
Cody was a very caring, supportive, and loving individual. Cody always created meaningful connections with family, friends, and anyone he crossed paths with. He shared a significant relationship with Elizabeth Wells. He was a very humorous and joyful person. His personality always left a room in good spirits. It did not matter who you were he would always create funny remarks to get you laughing. He was always caught riling up his grandma Jennifer, auntie Toby, auntie Leslie, and all his other aunties. He loved to hear his children laugh and would do or say anything silly to accomplish his satisfaction to make his babies smile. Cody also had a mischievous side to him. He could always be caught up in mischief with his younger brothers Rylan and Colton. There was a time Joe allowed Cody to take his brothers to a hockey game using his truck. When Cody and his brothers could not be found, Joe and Christy panicked. Cody had Joe and Christy searching the liquor stores and bars of Fort Macleod. They eventually made their way through Lethbridge to further their search. The search ended when the boys returned home and walked up the stairs to find Joe and Christy looking down at them. Cody failed to mention to Joe and Christy that he was bringing the boys to hang out with him at a friend’s house but pressured his brothers into not mentioning where or who they were with. Cody left us a legacy of memories that we shall cherish forever, his big cheesy smile, laughter, humbleness, kindness, respect but most of all his love for his family, friends and all who knew him.
Cody was raised in a traditional Blackfoot setting and received his Blackfoot name Miisinsski “Badger” from his late grandfather Kssiistsikomina “Thunder Chief”. Cody was a part of the Brave Dog Society and a holder for the Thunder Medicine Pipe. He liked taking part in sweats whether it be bringing in the rocks, managing the door, or going in. He gravitated towards his fathers foots steps and took an interest in equine just like his grandfather and father. All the boys enjoyed helping Joe take care of the horses. Cody could always be found helping his older cousins especially Fagan rounding up cattle and horses. While all the boys had different interests, Cody took a special appreciation for steer wrestling and enjoy being on the rodeo trail. He was overjoyed when he made it to IRCA finals and the RRCA finals in the same year while being the youngest of all the competitors in the steer wrestling competition. Everyone was proud of him. Cody continued to accomplish many achievements one in particular was when he received his high school diploma. He graduated from Cardston high school in 2010. Not long after he found out he would become a father to Kynleigh Charmayne Camdyn Day Chief with his high school sweetheart Mandy Creighton. Cody was later blessed with his youngest baby boy, Leo Sheldon Myles Day Chief. These were some of his proudest moments. Cody also excelled in various jobs like the oil industry and construction. When he was not with family or working, he was spending his time with brothers and friends. Cody created many meaningful connections, but shared a significant bond with Timmy, Andrew, and Tyrus. Cody had many friends and built long lasting friendships with various people, too many to mention.
